Can I give my 20 month old peanut butter?

She loves toast for breakfast, but I've run out of butter (I know, I'm a terrible mother). I don't even have any cheese spread.

So, do I give her peanut butter - I don't have any history of nut allergy in my family?

It's ok I found this - I have very mild asthma, so I will avoid.

was going to say, as long as no allergys, eczema or asthma in the family then yes. but obviously for your dd, its a no.

Thanks, Misdee. I'm sure she's developing asthma anyway

I think it's Nigella Lawson who says she first gave peanut butter to her kids in the doctors surgery - in case they reacted

the wee girl i look after is 18 months and loves peanut butter has had it since about 12 months

best not to just yet. If you really want to avoid nut, though, you also need to be very careful with cheap ice cream as much of that will be unsuitable. Have a look at some of the threads on the allergy section about coping with nut allergy and you'll try pretty hard to avoid anything that might start it!

i personally WOULD give a 20month old peanut butter

as a guide if theres no history of nut allergies in the family then from 12 months they can have things that contain nuts.... but NOT whole nuts until much later.

If they are an eczma / asthmatic tho and are more prone to allergies then maybe not, but if they have a tiny touch i would give them a tiny scraping and see if / how they reacted.

I know lots of 1 year olds who LOVE peanut butter!

if unsure try other nut butters which are less allergic than peanuts, such as cashew, hazelnut or almond and take it from there.

increasing number of children with allergies these days and quite a few in families with no previous history of food allergy. If you must try any nut butter rub a litttle on the child's arm first. Leave it a while to see if there is any rash. If there isn't rub a little on the skin of the face. If there is still no reaction put a tiny smear on their lip. If there is still no reaction you can let them eat a little, keeping liquid piriton handy and giving them 5ml immediately at any sign of trouble. Any sign of breathing problems and you dial 999 while trying to keep them calm and not letting them move around too much. Keep them sitting up, don't try to use the recovery position.

I'd prefer not to see your kids mentioned in the allergy section

Ok, thank you, I will leave it a bit, then. It's just that dp has it a lot, and his little girl, too, when she comes. DD often wants to pinch what others have, so I wanted to be prepared!
