I should know this, having taught this age group, but I can't remember .

Ds1 starts full days from tomorrow and I just wanted to get an idea of how much people are putting in a 4 year old's lunchbox.

My dd has a sandwhich, a piece of fruit, 2 or so biscuits and some crisps or mini-cheddars, and a driunk. She usually gets through this all.

1 round of sandwiches i.e 2 sandwiches, 1 small yogurt (& spoon!!) small pot of grapes, few carrot sticks, bottle of water and a smily note saying love you!!

Does my dd fine, she says she doesn't have time to eat any more before the juniors come into the dining room and they do have fruit at morning break too.... Oh she's just gone inyo Yr1
hth! oh and good luck for the full days, he'll be knackered by Friday!!

emkana · 25/09/2005 21:00

sandwich made with two slices, some cucumber pieces, some cherry tomatoes, small pot of yoghurt, plus organix fruit dippers, which is a double pot with four biscuits and fruit puree to dip them into. Dd always eats the lot.

Great, thanks folks - I know they don't get a great deal of time in the lunch hall and I didn't want to overload him with stuff.

This is a bit of a dumb question, but do you think it's ok to make sarnies the night before and leave them in the fridge? What about cheese and pineapple chunks in a little pot (this is his fave, but a bit fiddly at 7.30am)?

Gawd, I know all there is to know about the maths and reading schemes he'll be on, but I'm clueless about some things !

A sandwhich (2 slices of bread)or crackers
A piece of fruit
A yoghurt
Sometimes a sausage roll or pepperami
Tuesdays and Fridays I put a treat in like a twix or piece of cake
A drink.

waterfalls · 25/09/2005 21:11

I do DS whole lunch the night before and put his lunch bag in the fridge, just have to grab it in the morning

Lucycat · 25/09/2005 22:14

Oh yes, definately make it the night before! Just don't forget to get it out of the fridge!

Gobbledigook · 25/09/2005 22:17

ds1 started reception a couple of weeks ago - a typical lunchbox for him is:

Cheese roll/sandwich
Pot of grapes (or cheese cubes if not cheese in sarnie!)
Box of raisins
Orange
Pack of mini jammie dodgers or a brunch/cereal type bar
Drink

Other things i put in are yoghurts, mini muffin, hula hoops or low fat crisps, currant bun.

I tend not to put bananas or apples in because they don't get eaten but he will eat them till they are coming out of his ears once he gets home!

Gobbledigook · 25/09/2005 22:18

Puff - we always make sandwiches the night before, wrap in foil and keep in the fridge. I also cut the grapes in half or cut the cheese and put it in the pot in the fridge. All the other things I put in the lunchbox ready so all I have to do is bung in the refridgerated stuff in the morning.

motherinferior · 25/09/2005 22:18

DD1 is eating virtually nothing

Oh, and I've frozen a batch of sarnies, take them out and thaw them in the fridge the previous night.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 22:18

oh god no! Leave the crusts on - DS1 would be livid with me if I cut his crusts off!!

puff · 25/09/2005 22:18

I'm off to make it now and pop in fridge overnight!

one sandwich = 2 slices of bread cut in half with whatever filling

piece of fruit for break and one for dinner

small bag of crisp and biscuit bar. bottle of water for during the day ( that should be allowed helps concentration) and some juice for dinner

Tortington · 25/09/2005 23:36

also extra fruit is good for "swapsies" with friends

bootsmonkey · 26/09/2005 08:25

Oh no, not frozen sandwiches!!! My mother did this and I still cannot face cheese and pickle sarnies, having had years of soggy ones at school. Dunno if it is just cheese and pickle , but the bread was always wringing wet.....

UGH - sorry MI
