DP started a new job recently and it's shifts so his meals will be a bit wonky. Fortunately he's got access to a fridge and microwave. To avoid dinner at breakfast time etc I thought I'd cook in bulk and portion it so he can take a decent meal and not survive on sandwiches for a week at a time.

I already make things like shepherd's pie, spag bol, chilli, enchiladas, curries, fajitas, fish pie, stews. Sometimes we'll have a roast or I'll boil up a gammon joint. Can anyone suggest other ideas that work well to portion and reheat?

I'd also love some soup suggestions - currently it's lentil with the odd mulligatawny or mushroom for a change. Must be easy and not too pricey - 2 small children, one still EBF, means I'm short on cash and time!

Leek & Potato soup is the best.

Chicken & Veg, but use plenty of carrot so that it doesn't go too brown - it can VERY easily look like bad diarrhoea (sorry, TMI)

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE brocolli and stilton, but I know that blue cheese is an acquired taste, so shan't be offended if you say "Yeuch!" (but it is worth a try)

I know it sounds obvious, but check out the FRESH soup refrigerator in the supermarket, as you may disregard it normally, but good for inspiration.

My DH loves smoked haddock chowder, but if you make your own, you might need to fumigate the house for a week afterwards - can be bad enough heating some in a microwave for 3 minutes!!!

Will post again if/when I get more inspiration.

Sorry, broccoli and stilton is a yeuch for me. DP would survive on the stuff though [bleurgh]

I never use leeks, that's a good idea. Must pick some up. Thanks :)

You want your spuds to be nice and soft, but not so much that they go horribly watery when you blitz them to make your lovely, gorgeous soupy soupness!!!!

Someone else might be able to give good advice about which might be the best type of tates to use; I know that they've all got their best uses, but that's as far as my potato knowledge goes!!!

I've just bought 25kg of Roosters so it'll be those or nothing :)

I've heard that Roosters are the best for Leek and Potato soup!! Xmas Wink

lostinafrica · 06/12/2010 18:44

I'm into carrot and coriander soup at the moment. Might be the same yeeurghh response as to stilton, though...

stickersarecurrency · 06/12/2010 21:12

Less yeuch though!

Cauliflower makes a really delicious soup, honest.

I make lentil and bacon (with green lentils, rather than red) and that always goes down well.

Am a big fan of Nigella's minestrone, too, although I only use one courgette in her recipe that calls for two, because am not wild about courgettes.

aBrightStarWithFestiveWays · 06/12/2010 21:23

This souop is gorgeous, easy to make and cheap. Very warming for the winter too :)

Ham and lentil soup?

aBrightStarWithFestiveWays · 06/12/2010 21:23

soup not souop Xmas Blush

stickersarecurrency · 06/12/2010 21:27

Ooh minestrone, good idea. And that lentil one is already a staple, but exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for so thank you :)
