Gluten free bread

Where do you find the stuff?
Just switched Lottie to a gluten free diet. Not exactly easy is it, bloody stuff crops up everywhere.
But she keeps asking for toast today, bless her. I'm baking my own as I type but not sure it's gonna come out right, it was a bit sticky to start and hmmm, not sure about it, so thought while it goes wrong in the oven if anyone knew where I could any from?
I've tried Sainsburys and a health food shop to no avail.
TIA.

Tescos do a Free From range which included sliced white bread.... just checked their website. HTH

jenk1 · 25/09/2005 16:30

morissons and asda sell it, i get mine on prescription for my dd as she is allergic to gluten and wheat

vickitiredmum · 25/09/2005 16:30

I thought sainsbury's did have a gluten free one, if not their own brand?

Thomcat · 25/09/2005 17:03

Deffo nothing in Sainsbury's, ha e a tesco near me at work so will check there tomorrow. Think my home made loaf will be a bit stodgy / heavy, looks okay from the outside though, but sod doing that every week without fail.

I find most of it is a little nasty. I make my own now with Doves Farm Gluten-free bread flour. It's very easy and doesn't need kneading.

I found the bought ones to be pretty disgusting on the whole.

Thomcat · 25/09/2005 17:15

The stuff I used today was knead free too. Mixed dough in food processor. Wasn't that hard so maybe I will make it every week.
Lottie loves her toast and marmite.
I hadn't baked bread yet so she thought my offerings of fuit loaf, yoghurt, gluten free biscuit and a banana most odd, she looked at me like 'what the hell...... where's the usual round of toast mother, I didn't ask for a picnic, just bring me my toast'!

Stamp collection has just won Best Gluten Free in a mag I was flicking through at the Chinese. I noticed cos my boss is coeliac. It was £1.39/loaf which didn't seem too expensive but boss gets most stuff on prescription and has tried many sorts of bread, mostly thinks they are yuck.

helsi · 25/09/2005 17:34

Morrisons had a good selection of bread and other things last time I was in.

macwoozy · 25/09/2005 17:37

For all gluten free foods I've always considered Tesco's to have the greatest range including bread.

alison222 · 25/09/2005 17:46

Dad says most of them are pretty horrid but you get used to them. Our sainsburys does them, as do Tesco, asda etc. Health food shops too - Hollad & barret as well as the independent ones.
You can get it on prescription if its an allergy.
Also it doesn't keep well. Dad keeps his wrapped in foil and then in a bag in the fridge usually.
best eaten very fresh I think is the rule. Especially things like Asda bread rolls - which are nice when they have just cooled down apparently.
He eats a bread called juvella - but is having difficulty getting hold of it at the mo. Its expensive too about 3.00 a loaf last time I looked.

maddyd · 25/09/2005 17:48

Rice bread tatses alot nicer and softer than the usual gluten free stuff. Its also dairy free

alison222 · 25/09/2005 17:48

Oh and if you are making your own gluten free stuff get some xanthan gum from a health food shop. you add it to the flour and it imrves the elasticity apparently which is what is laking in gluten free flour

alison222 · 25/09/2005 17:50

improves I mean. Must proof read before posting

Well home made loaf cooled and first slice whoolfed down by my DD, so a success. I cut it in half and froze one half for weekend /next week.

Will visit Tesco's tomorrow and see what else I can find.

Thanks everyone.

Sainsburys should stock the Stamp collection stuff as well as their own brand, all of it's pretty horrible in my opinion. Obv if your little one wants toast there's not much you can do about it - and your first go at home-cooking seems quite successful anyway! - but I've just eliminated bread from our diet as it's easier than chewing on the wretched stuff. (Well, I eat 'normal' bread but only when dh isn't looking )
