Me too bh - I've just got a slow cooker as well.

There's quite a few recipes on the web - lots of American ones where they call it a "crockpot".

I've made a fab lentil soup in mine so far (I'll post the recipe later), and today I'm doing shoulder of lamb with veg - fellow Mumsnetter Aero said this is one of her favourite recipes.

I'll post anything I try that is a success !

Anyone have one that would good to buy. I am totally converted!

I'm thinking about buying a slow cooker - which did you pick? Is it good? Anything to look out for?

puff · 25/09/2005 21:34

Mine'a a morphy richards 3.5L capacity - plenty for a family of four, with leftovers for next day. It was a present, so I'm not sure how much they are, but I don't think it's an expensive brand. It's brill and I am a convert.

BH, this is the lentil soup recipe which is yum:

LENTIL SOUP
1 lge onion finely chopped
3 carrots finely diced
2 sticks celery finely chopped
1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1100ml veg stock
2 bayleaves
rounded teaspn mixed herbs
couple of good pinches of black pepper
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar or 3 teaspoons worcestershire sauce.

I've left this on a medium heat for about 6 hours.
If you like a smoother consistency, you can wizz it up with a stick blender towards the end of cooking time.

Nopearls - I got a 3 litre one in the sale at Argos last week for a tenner!

Puff - thanks for that. Looks delicious

NoPearls · 25/09/2005 21:40

Thanks for that - will go and see if the Argos sale is still on!

Right - BH -I've just ordered 2 slow cooker recipe books from Amazon. I'll let you know what I think of them when they arrive , and if they are worth recommending.

Blossomhill · 25/09/2005 21:59

Thanks Puff. I want something with fairly simple dishes in. Nothing that requires too much effort. I like the bung it in and cooks itself method most

Me too! If they're too complicated they're going back !

Blossomhill · 25/09/2005 22:01

I agree. That's how I felt about the AK family meal book. Far too fussy for me !

I second the Morphy Richards recommendation - they're the panasonic breadmaker of the slow cooker world - no other machine comes close I have the 6.5L capacity one and it's HUGE!

puff · 03/10/2005 09:48

bh - still waiting for them . Amazon are usually really fast with delivery - I want my books!!!!!!!!!

puffinthedark · 03/10/2005 18:17

bh - they finally arrived this afternoon from Amazon.

Ok, I bought 2:

The Slow Cooker Cookbook by Catherine Atkinson (£11.89)

The Slow Cooker Cookbook by Gina Steer (£9.09)

The Atkinson one is huge, very detailed, goes into lots of details about cuts of meat (including rabbit!) and has v interesting recipes - I think I may graduate to it later !

The Gina Steer book is more "accessible" and seems to have plenty of straightforward recipes. Examples include:

minestrone soup
sweet potato soup
lentil and squash broth
fish provencal
fish and pasta bake (didn't realise could do pasta in slow cooker)
boeuf bourguignon
chilli tacos
pork cassoulet
barbecued ribs
sweet and sour gammon
lamb ragu
braised lamb shanks
chicken gumbo supper
chicken risotto (risottos are easy in a slow c apparently)
vegetable goulash
tuscan bean stew

there's also a recipe for chocolate fondue (drool)!

Anyway, of the two books, I'd recommend this one. If you want to order it and don't like it, it's easy enough to return to Amazon and get your money back.

KingPuff · 04/10/2005 21:22

bump for bh

super1971 · 04/10/2005 21:33

am i missing something?, what is a slow cooker is in not the same as setting the timer on the oven and leaving your casserole in there instead? or does the slow cooker do it better? sorry if i am being thinck

KingPuff · 05/10/2005 10:03

I do find the slow cooker makes meat wonderfully tender, much more so than if I did it on a low heat in the oven.
