High protein portable lunches

I get rather sleepy in afternoon lectures and wondered if avoiding the usual carby lunches that are available in the canteens (i.e. sandwiches or pasta) might help. So far I can only think of:

Soup - not really hot enough by lunch time.
Chicken drumsticks - a bit messy if I'm perched on a bench somewhere as there's not many places to eat your own food at uni.
marinated strips of beef with salad...
...er...

...er...

I wish I liked fish, but I don't...

I find that eating carbs at lunch makes me really sleepy. Instead you could try:

  • Any of those packs of cold meat from the supermarket: chorizo, ham, chicken breasts.
  • homemade frittata using any veg/meat/cheese
  • humous/tzatziki/guacamole with veg to dip, and falafel if you like
  • egg mayo with cucumber and celery
  • ham and cheese rolls: spread cream cheese onto ham, roll up into cigar shape (Also nice with smoked salmon if you eat it)
  • prawns and mayo, if you eat prawns

All of the above can be accompanied by salad and tomatoes. If you really need a carby substrate to your meal, try oatcakes which release their sugar more slowly than bread and pasta, so give you less of a crash after eating. Think low GI and you'll notice the difference.

I cut carbs out at lunchtime after nearly falling asleep about 2.30 as a result. The difference in my energy levels is phenomenal.

I mainly eat soup, or dip/cream cheese and crudities, sometimes a few breadsticks ( yes I know but not as bad as bread or pasta )or eggs at lunchtime now, altho I appreciate that not all of these are mega portable. Is the canteen opne for breakfast and when does it stop serving brekkie? I'm thinking you may be able to get some poached or scrambled eggs around 11 and then can have fruit and veg/crudities at 1ish.

Salad is good and filling if supplemented with protein, my fave is smoked mackerel with pink grapefruit, watercress and seeds. Balsamic dressing in a separate pot to add just before you eat it. Or a salad with cherry toms, little cubes of goats cheese, cooked puy lentils and lots of herbs with a vinaigrette dressing on the side.

Mmmm...some lovely ideas! I quite like the idea of just munching on meat/eggs. I need to get organized with a shopping list!
