just tried it and it's in the oven. Must have done something wrong as the dough looked nothing like the book even though I followed amounts and directions.

Sifted 1Ib of plain flour into bowl
added 1 tsp of salt
added 1tsp of bicarb if soda
400 ml of buttermilk

All I got was a complete gooey mess - any advice, please?

400ml looks like a lot of liquid for that much flour. But I know squat all about breadmaking outside of my breadmaker recipes :o

I think the recipe is probably OK in terms of quantities, but different flours can differ quite a lot in how much the absorb IYSWIM, so I think it's best to add the liquid gradually until you reach the right consistency, rather than put it all in at once.

sure you're right Kurri - will try agaoin and add the buttermilk slowly!

I recon the key is in the flour- you need strong stoneground wholemeal (8oz), plain flour (8oz) and 4oz porridge oats, 1 tsp baking powder and 2 tsp bicarb soda, as well as 15oz sour milk/buttermilk. I made this for the 1st time at the weekdn and it was great, a recipe passed onto me from my father in law. He said bake at 200 c for 40 mins. Good luck!

thanks lizlou - will try my recipe again as I want to see where I went wrong and it's very simple. Will give yours a go as well - it sounds delish!
