my dd is only just one - she will not under any circumstances wahtsoever drink water, and never has done! so we gave in and gave her juice in the end as she wasnt drinking enough at all. we give her the bottles of baby fruit juices you can buy, i think they are by heinz or someone, pure apple juice, pure cherry and apple etc etc
however they are quite expensive and i go through half a bottle a day - i was wondering what else is suitable for a baby - can i give her diluted sugar free orange cordial?

paaaaaaarrrrrrpppp

WATER

Hulababy · 22/09/2005 15:43

My DD also wouldn't drink plain water at that age. I gave her water with increasingly less and less fruit juice in it. She's now 3yo and drinks water all the time and chooses it over pop.

Water with a tiny bit of fresh juice in and slowly reduce the amount of juice till she is drinking water.

Sugar free stuff is full of crappy aspartame and stuff. Sugar in moderation is much better than that.

she will not drink water!!!

I wouldn't give any "sugar free" drinks to babies because they are sweetened with artificial sweetners which IMO are much worse than sugar

I would go down a path which ended up with water being the default drink, if necessary dilute more and more until she is having plain water.

we decided not to give in, and my dd's now happily drink water or milk

GeraldGiraffe · 22/09/2005 15:48

Parp!

fairycakes · 22/09/2005 15:49

well if i hadnt given in my dd would have died of dehydration so i am not ashamed of "giving in"

If you do decide to give juice you can use pure apple juice and dilute it down with water. DS1 is 6 1/2 and still has his apple juice diluted.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2005 15:52

You don't need baby juice, just dilute ordinary fresh juice. Agree with diluting it more and more over time - drinking water is a good habit to get into.

bundle · 22/09/2005 15:53

but those juices are ridiculously expensive, why don't people give just ordinary fruit juice diluted?

SoupDragon · 22/09/2005 16:06

Because they're baby juice and you think they are better for your baby Been there done that with my Precious First Born!!

MrsSpoon · 22/09/2005 16:20

It was ordinary fruit juice I meant, don't think I made that very clear.

NannyL · 22/09/2005 19:39

WATER is the alternative....

no THIRSTY human being will NOT drink it!

as fro expensive baby juises i think they are a con.... if you MUST gibe them juice by 'normal' fruit juice (NOT fruit juice drink which are full of sugar water and otehr crap thats NOT juice related) and add water to it...

if you think baby relaly only likes juice than dilute it more and more until it essentailly IS water!

What i do is a homemade fresh Fruit drink.
One day I buy a honeydew melon (NO SEEDS), take some of the fruit and blend it very well with a little bit of sugar and with water.
Other days I use Watermelon, Limes, apples, etc.
My 20 month old daughter loves it!! The good thing is I just do a two little jug for the whole day and just keep topping up the children's glass throughout the day!!
It's got sugar but at least you know what you are putting to it!!
