What vegetables DO NOT need to go in the fridge?

I'm sure there are some that people put in the fridge out of habit but are better in a fruit bowl. Everyone is telling me different things Confused

So, as our fridge is still playing up and freezing everything, can anyone please suggest some vegetables that will keep outside the fridge?

In this weather none at all if you have a garage or shed - stick em in there & they'll keep just fine. The only thing I would bother putting in a fridge would be salad, really.

We have crates of potatoes, carrots, turnips, apples, onions & I fully expect them to keep for months in the store-room at the end of our garage.

(Should point out that we are veg growers rather than mad survivalists expecting social breakdown!)

i would say that pretty much no veg needs to be kept in the fridge.

i strongly suspect that the only reason it does is because it's not actually that fresh by the time it reaches the supermarkets

certainly i find my abel and cole stuff is absolutely fine kept in its cardboard box

Ok thanks we dont have a garage or anything just a tiny kitchen, could I just keep things in fruit bowls?

I do put carrots in the fridge as they seem to go soft quite quickly if not, also peppers, broccoli, sprouts & mushrooms. apples & citrus also stay firm much longer in the fridge.

Spuds, onions & toms fine in cool cupboard.

Takver · 20/11/2010 20:30

Can't see why not - it'll probably keep a bit less long than if it were outdoors/somewhere cooler, but unless you plan on keeping stuff for weeks it should be fine. Our fruit bowl always has random veg in it that I've brought in & then not used (preferably not too muddy).

I used to have a great set of three veg storing tiered baskets that hung from the ceiling that I stupidly left behind when I moved one time out of a shared house, good space saver for storing veg in a small kitchen but never seen anything similar since.

I asked about this on another thread earlier in the week, but my concern was cooked veg left out, covered, and then reused.

Anyone on this thread got any opinions on this for me? Smile

Alopogies for hi-jack.

Nothing needs to go in the fridge, bar stuff like soft fruit and cucumber. Everything else will be just as good, if not better, left out of it.

taffetacat · 20/11/2010 21:29

Tomatoes lose their flavour and texture in the fridge, much better left out.

Potatoes I keep in the cupboard, alongside garlic and onions. Avocados in the fruit bowl.

If your fridge is freezing stuff, it may benefit from a defrost? Fresh veg that has been semi frozen and then defrosted is horrid, do you have a cold room/area where there's no heating at all? I often keep stuff in our unheated utility area in the winter, and always at Christmas when space is at a premium.

Takver · 20/11/2010 21:32

That's very much the sort of thing, Ponders, although mine was wicker. I used to line it with newspaper to stop gritty bits of mud/earth falling through - not sure that would look so great with that one (maybe you are meant to have cleaner vegetables!)

I have done a bit of basket making, & have thought of having a go at making one myself - now I've been reminded, maybe I'll try it:)

Takver · 20/11/2010 21:34

Christmastruly - I would def. do what you suggest so long as it wasn't the height of summer & 30 in the shade, do it all the time & haven't poisoned any of us yet. Like someone said, people were around a long time before fridges, & I'm betting they kept their leftovers, & didn't feed them all to the wolfhounds.

ChristmasTrulyReigns · 20/11/2010 21:42

Yeah, maybe I should get over my Fridge is King mentality - would make life easier if I could just dump the cooked veg in the garage rather playing tetris in the fridge.

I shall unclench.
