How many pieces of sushi in a sitting?

Went out for a most delicious lunch of nigiri sushi today and noticed that my partner and I had considerably more empty plates to account for at the end than anyone else in the place. Out of interest, how many pieces of sushi would people think is acceptable and not in the 'OMG look at the greedy f**kers over there' category?

I've never had real sushi - only the boxes from M&S - but I could really do with a large portion of chips to go with that. It's not exactly filling is it ?

What a brilliant opening post!
I'd eat as much as my greedy belly could take!

flamesparrow · 19/09/2005 17:15

Pregnant, craving sushi, don't know if I'm allowed it, and even if I am, I have no idea where to get any round here (not normally a fan of sushi)>

Willow2 · 19/09/2005 17:15

Considering it verges on healthy, as many as you can stomach. It's not like it's chocolate ffs.

colditz · 19/09/2005 17:15

the thing about sushi restaurants is, people on diets go there for the low fat food, then return to their afternoon of fainting on their keyboards.

So their appetite is no indication of how much you should eat.

flamesparrow · 19/09/2005 17:17

In answer to the question (jealousy aside ) - Eat as much as you like... Sod going hungry incase other people stare

ScummyMummy · 19/09/2005 17:24

Thanks guys- feel better about huge sushi fest now! We had two v skinny Americans sitting next to us who had only 2 plates each and we became paranoid that we were truly gluttonous instead of just cool foodies as we pretend usually. Can you cheer me up about my horrible children now, please?

Two plates, thats a snack. ALso agree the packs you get in M&S are not usually enough for a meal.
We always have loads of empty plates too.

CarolinaMoon · 19/09/2005 17:55

oooh, you're making my mouth water now! I didn't eat sushi when pregnant because it's raw (except M&S's, which isn't), and haven't had any since, grrrr. Bet I would've had more empty plates than scummy!

two plates? bet they just didn't like it at all but felt they had to sit there for a reasonable length of time so that no-one would pick up on their lack of culinary kudos

me, I'd eat the contents of the whole damn revolving raw fish carrier thingy except I wouldn't be able to stomach the amount of Asahi I'd need to accompany it.

A girl can dream though...

i do make myself, couple weeks ago we did shopping and bought posh one in tray from M&S was disappointed.
korean sushi called kimpap is the best. i normally get some seaweed sheets from korea, so i can make my own. dh loves them we eat it with redish pickle and kimchi.
i do really recommend korean food to those like far east asian meal. im sure you will love it, but ask them make you less spicy, could be a bit spicy.

Carmenere · 20/09/2005 15:09

diva4mgl - I have to agree. we stayed in the Korean district in NY and ate in local restaurants quite a few times- really tasty and delicious food. And kimchi, I love it, I actually have some in the fridge from the Wing Yip supermarket. It is an accquired taste but I loved it -Yum!

ScummyMummy · 20/09/2005 16:34

Mmmm- is kimchi the pickled spicy cabbage dish? It is absolutely yummy, if so. Are there any good Korean restaurants in London, does anyone know?

GhostofNatt · 20/09/2005 17:21

GhostofNatt · 20/09/2005 17:24

there's a Korean restaurant at Tower Hill that we used to go to at work for lunch - was v nice, although I'm not sure how it would stack up against other Korean restaurants as I haven't been to any. It also had a sushi conveyor belt in the middle, so you could get your raw fish fix there.
