And while we're at it what time do you (aim to) have your dinner?

OP posts:
NorkilyChallenged · 05/11/2010 08:56

Why is Christmas dinner (for those who have it as lunch rather than evening meal) so late? No way could the kids wait til 2.30-3 and neither could I to be honest....

NorkilyChallenged · 05/11/2010 08:57

Also have never thought about breakfast, so probably usually just eat chocolates or something. Wondering about this year now the dc are a bit older, need to have proper breakfast before they eat tons of sweets [hypocrite]

Smash09 · 05/11/2010 09:31

Whatever we fancy! Sometimes our usual cereal/toast, sometimes eggs, sometimes a bit of toast followed by chocolate Wink

I do always make a really nice fruit salad with some of the more luxury fruits, and put a bit of cinnamon on mine :)

ayjayjay · 05/11/2010 10:26

NorkilyChallenged we have dinner at post 2pm to give us time to cook it without having to get up at the crack of dawn or rush the DCs through present opening.

Jumblygirl · 05/11/2010 10:33

Crikey. Never occurred to me to have anything special.

Half a grapefruit.

Marmite on toast.

Cup of cha.

That's it.

And it's NEVER leisurely because by that stage we've already had stockings and after breakfast it's presents from us parents to dc, then it's church, then it's lunch (always at least 12 people) at 1 pm sharp.

Then it's washing up.

Then it's the Queen.

Then it's presents from dc to each other and everyone else to everyone else.

Then turkey sandwiches and cake.

Then it's time for Mummy to hit the fortified wine.

Military family. Got to keep up with the schedule don't you know. Confused

HowsTheSerenity · 05/11/2010 11:12

We eat our chocolate letters and olibollen for pre breakfast food.

Then, if anyone can be arsed, we eat bacon and eggs.

Then we have lunch around 2pm when it starts to cool down.

NormalityBites · 05/11/2010 11:13

We don't have breakfast on Christmas Day.

Food on Christmas day is Christmas Dinner served from 4pm until the early hours.

lovemyangels · 05/11/2010 12:35

I amke Nigella's Christmas morning muffins and we have them with posh marmalade and real butter and nice coffe for adults, milk for DCs.
We eat around 2.30pm

ComeWhineWithMe · 05/11/2010 12:39

We are having This you can make it the day before and it is gorgeous.

SheWillBeLoved · 05/11/2010 13:00

Full fry up, yum! Forget pissing around with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, get the sausages on Grin Christmas dinner is usually around 4-5pm, followed by selection boxes and big soggy turkey/stuffing/gravy sandwiches for supper, yummm [slobbering emoticon]

taffetacat · 05/11/2010 13:25

Norkily - In effect, the DC have 3 meals:

  • Brekkie
  • Nibbly lunch
  • Full on Christmas lunch around 3-4pm

The adults inevitably have some more cold scoff around 8ish

TeaOneSugar · 05/11/2010 14:39

Probably some toasted panattone with butter and jam, and proper coffee.

I might bake muffins if I'm organised enough to weigh out the dry ingredients the night before.

taffetacat · 05/11/2010 14:41

yum! toasted pannetone - what a nice idea. I think a slice or two might go down well after our dippy eggs.

thanks tea :)

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 05/11/2010 14:43

Nothing - never eat breakfast. When kids were little they had a kilo of galaxy chocolate each and a selection box. (only joking!!)

Xmas dinner at 2pm -, lasts till around 4pm. Pressies after lunch.

galletti · 05/11/2010 14:49

With pressies, Nigella's Christmas Morning muffins.

Little later, bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and bubbly/bucks fizz.

Eat in the evening, around 5.00/6.00pm, as its usually just the three of us for Christmas Day itself.

bundlebelly · 05/11/2010 14:52

I have chocolate money and a satsuma! It's traditional!

Dinner at one ish

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 05/11/2010 16:33

Bucks fizz and croisants Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 16:38

Mince pies and clotted cream.

I make a batch of mince pies on Christmas eve, shove 'em in the oven Cjristmas morning.

When they are cool, served with clotted cream and a cup of tea. Take the lid off the pie, put a dollop of cream in, put lid on, wolf down throat.

This is at about 10 (dd is a teenager, we all get up at about 9ish YES YOU WITH SMALL CHILDREN you will get a lie in on Christmas day one day!)

Then visit MIL (where all DP's brothers and sister gather) for more mince pies and wine.

Troop home to cook dinner. It's ready when it's ready.

FakePlasticTrees · 05/11/2010 16:43

Doesn't everyone have a Terrys Chocolate Orange for breakfast, while their mother tries to force sensible foods like toast or cereal on them?

Lunch in previous years around 2, this year, have DS who'll be 1 by then, not sure he'll last until 2 and will be a grumpy sod, infact, not sure he'll last until 1, but don't want to have him eat on his own... (must plan this better)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/11/2010 16:49

Breakfast is normally smoked salmon and eggs with toasted muffins, and champagne and chocolate for those that want.

Lunch is normally 2.30ish. My Mum always does a vast turkey because we all like there to be lots left over for turkey and stuffing sandwiches later in the week - yum. So even with the oven coming on at 6.30am, 2.30 is about as early as it can be ready. Also we normally go to some friends for drinks at around 12, so lunch at 1pm would veto that.

Supper is mince pies, homemade pork pie, salad, cheese and biscuits, more chocolate. Yum, yum, yum.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/11/2010 16:52

Fake - DS was not quite 18 months last year, and he had a sandwich when we all had pre-lunch nibbles at about 12.30. Sat in his highchair with everyone around him also eating, he was happy as a pig in the proverbial. He had a bit of christmas lunch as well, and then keeled over for a sleep so DH and I got to eat ours largely in peace which was lovely. We will have a similar plan this year I think, depending on how much breakfast he's eaten and what time he wakes up in the morning.

bigTillyMint · 05/11/2010 17:49

lovemyangels I make them too! But we just eat them as they are - no marmalade or jam.

We go to church, then to the pub and then have dinner when we get back and it is cooked. Maybe 5 or 6ish.

I'm not sure what we have in-between - maybe smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye bread? Crisps?

mamalovesmojitos · 05/11/2010 21:47

breakfast is cereal or yoghurt - nothing fancy. substantial nibbles and champagne around midday with family.

home to lie around, maybe have a beer and some crisps late afternoon, then dinner around five or six. looking forward to it now.

ravenAK · 05/11/2010 22:04

A walloping great Bloody Mary Grin

fatlazymummy · 06/11/2010 16:19

I will do a bacon butty, followed by dinner at about 2. Tea will just be a few sausage rolls, crisps etc.
