Vegetarian sausages

Can anyone recommend some good vegetarian sausages? I'm having a fireworks party on Saturday, and am making bangers and mash, but I have a couple of vegetarians to cater for, and I'd like them to have sausages too.

Only I remember vegetarian sausages from my distant past as being only slightly more edible than cardboard, and I'm not sure what to go for.

Thanks a lot!

Quorn are the most popular in my house. YOu can get them frozen or chilled, and the chilled ones come in some different flavours - the bramley apple ones are nice.
Avoid Linda McCartney ones. I really like them, but not everyone does.

bintofbohemia · 02/11/2010 13:42

I personally prefer quorn, but my non-veggie Dh reckons Linda McCartney's are the best. (I find them a bit greasy.) The cauldron ones used to be the best but they have a weird texture now.

pinguwings · 02/11/2010 13:43

Yeah most are still only slightly more edible than cardboard. I find the quorn ones are edible. Things like bean burgers are much nicer.

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 13:51

thanks very much, ladies - the bramley apple quorn ones sound interesting, and bean burgers might be a good option too.

Linda in this house, and spicey bean burgers

alienbump · 02/11/2010 13:54

These www.goodlife.co.uk/glamorgan-sausage.html are scrummy, and usually a safer bet than the fake meat ones unless you know your friends like the wierdy texture of Quorn/McCartney etc. Be warned, everyone will want them though...

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 13:56

Oooh, alienbump, these glamorgan sausages sound delicious - and an excuse for a trip to Waitrose, too!

Will I find them in the chiller or freezer cabinet?

Quorn are horrid, rubbery texture & very stodgy. Lindas are the only way to go.

Having said that as you can tell from the comments here veggie sausages are a highly personal thing! Why not just ask your veggie friends what they prefer?

alienbump · 02/11/2010 13:59

Freezer section - might have to get some for dinner now you've planted the seed!

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 14:00

Hmm, yes, why didn't I think of asking them what they prefer! It honestly didn't occur to me!

Lindas are lovely IMO. My veggie relatives all love the Cauldron ones. I can't eat Quorn as it gives me such raging gutrot I can't do anything else for the day.

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 14:00

thanks, alienbump! those glamorgan sausages sound tasty enough even for a committed carnivore like myself to enjoy...

Quorn do frankfurter type sausages that are fine. They taste more like frankfurters than their sausages taste like sausages if that makes sense. Probably got the same meat content as a standard hotdog as well.

ShatnersBassoon · 02/11/2010 14:03

Just spotted it's for bangers and mash. I say Linda Mc in that case. They're dry and salty and repeat on me for a fortnight, but they're perfectly edible.

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 14:05

ShatnersBassoon, I don't want to give my digestive fireworks - you've put me right off Linda's efforts!

These are the same ones, made by the same people if Sainsburys is easierwww.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1288706743332

nickelbangBANGbang · 02/11/2010 14:09

definitely ask recipient - I hate Quorn!

I usually get the cauldron ones, but I used to like Linda McCartney's - the last tiem i had them they tasted too meaty, but it might have been "that time of the month" (believe me, things taste different!) Grin

nickelbangBANGbang · 02/11/2010 14:09

sorry, that should be Cauldron - it's a brand
Blush

ttalloo · 02/11/2010 14:11

thanks again, alienbump - Sainsbury's is easier, although I shall miss the excuse to wander round Waitrose.

weaselbudge · 02/11/2010 14:17

Another one here for cauldron! Although when i make bangers and mash for hubbie I tend to have a quorn peppered steak instead as prefer to sausages

HonestyBox · 02/11/2010 14:17

Cauldron I like. Linda Mc are the most like real sausages - you should bake them in the oven then they don't turn out greasy.

Don't like the Quorn ones.

shodatin · 03/11/2010 14:02

The only ones I like are from Holland and Barrets, called Premier I think, but even better are Tesco vegetarian chargrilled quarter-pounder burgers.
Don't like quorn or Linda, so yes, it's a good idea to ask friends.
