Hiya, I was going to attempt to make a digger or tractor type cake for my sons 2nd birthday. But decided I dont have much time to do a half decent job of it!! lol
Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced similar cake? Dont want to spend loads at a cake shop!

Could you do it using chocolate swiss roll, with slices of swiss roll for the big back wheels and mini-roll slices for the front wheels?

He's only 2 and won't be expecting something from the front cover of sugarcraft monthly - apologies to 'proper cake makers and decorators'.

did lol @ tb but it's true and he really won't notice
butter icing over the swiss roll would work really well tbh
failing that if you tell us whereabouts in the country you are we can make recommendations
or tout ourselvesWink

I am in Chester, so if you fancy popping up tonight and baking it for me, I would love to see how you do it Grin
I will have a go when he is in bed later, and try the swiss roll idea for the wheels!
OOH, actually quite excited now !! lol
Thanks for the tips.

It might help when slicing the mini-roll to put the blade of the knife into very hot water. That should help to cut the chocolate covering, rather than break it into bits.

wagan Wheels for the back and jaffa cakes for the front ?

aseriouslyblondemoment · 02/11/2010 22:34

del i'd be delighted to but i'm sadly too far away!
but seriously tho it is a do-able cake and supermarket swiss roll/wagon wheels/jaffas/iced gems etc are fab for last min jobs like these
have cobbled together a tank under similar circumstances before
it will be fab...we have faith in youGrin

My friend made DS a digger cake for his second birthday a few weeks ago.

Digger body and cab was madeira cake
all covered in yellow roll out icing
Wheels were liquorice pin wheels
Window was white icing, picked out in liquorice bootlace
Smartie eyes
Bucket was a mini swiss roll, unrolled a bit (didn't work brilliantly well)
Hydraulic arms (which hold bucket to digger) were choc fingers.

Looked pretty good, tasted foul! Too much sugary stuff at once. DS LOVED it.

I made DH a building site cake for his birthday, which was a bit simpler (he is a civil engineer):
Rocky Road base
Half built wall from bits of Twix, with marzipan "mortar".
Plastic toy digger from £1 shop, filled bucket with chocolate raisins "rubble".
Buried jam jar lid in rocky road, which I filled with lime jelly "Puddle", into which I put a tiny pair of wellies from a National Trust keyring,
