Pea & ham soup, split peas or normal peas, what's the difference?

Is pea & ham soup usually made with split peas or normal peas? Are split peas just dried peas? I find pulses quite chalky & don't like them much but always use split peas anyway as that seems to be the most common recipe but I've got a covent garden one in my freezer & that uses normal peas (& potatoes).

What do other people use?

Pea and ham soup, I think, would usually be made with split peas. It gives a thicker, creamer texture than if you used fresh/frozen peas, as well as a different colour.

I don't think a split pea is the same thing as a garden pea (although I could be wrong!)

I like to use dried peas but you have to soak them for 24 hours first - you can use split peas which don't need a day to soak.

When you say normal peas, do you mean dried peas or garden peas, because i don't think you can do soup with garden peas...

Well, well!

I always use split peas.
You could use fresh but then that's a different thing and not pea and ham soup as I know it.
I like the texture with split peas.

Ah thanks biwi. Split pea it is then. Any good recipes? I usually just use ham stock left over from my ham joint.
