Your very best waffle recipes, please, ladies!

So I bought a waffle maker today. From Lidl (nothing but the best chez PW Grin). And I have a recipe I use for making mini doughnuts in a HomerSimpson-shaped mini doughnut maker (yes, we are a classy household), but thought maybe there are amazing, much better, guaranteed-to-work formulae out there that you might be itching prepared to share??

Pretty please?

Apparently the Cuisinart Wafflemaker has a great recipe included in the box, but I baulked at 50 quid for a gadget to make the occasional treat. If however one of you ladies owned one and for the greater good of my family everybody would like to educate us, please do [hsmile].

I found the following recipe off the internet. I was originally put off by it because of the yeast and the time involved in preparation, but it is worth every minute. It is to DIE for (literally, with all the butter and sugar in it!). You can close your eyes and pretend to be in Belgium, just from the smell.

Liege Waffle Recipe

For a Liege Waffle recipe we will need:
2 cups flour
1 cup pearl sugar
1 cup melted butter
3 eggs
1 (1/4 ounce) package yeast
1/3 cup lukewarm water
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar (add some vanilla sugar)
1/8 teaspoon salt

How to make Liege Waffles in nine easy steps:

  1. Take the lukewarm water and mix in yeast, 1 1/2 tablespoon sugar and salt. Let the yeast develop for 15 minutes. In the meanwhile you can melt the butter, but be careful - do not burn it.
  1. Now take a large bowl and put in the flour, make a hole in the middle, pour in the yeast that you made in step one. Also add eggs and melted butter and knead until you get nice and even dough. Then let it rest so the yeast does it's magic and the dough doubles.
  1. Now take pearl sugar and gently mix it in.
  1. Again, let it rest for 15 minutes, in the meanwhile you can turn on the waffle maker so its nice and hot.
  1. All there is left is to pour the waffle dough into the waffle maker and bake for 3-5 minutes. Because we mixed in the sugar late in the process it will melt and caramelize and give that special Liege waffle taste. Just be careful when you take them out of the waffle maker, caramelized sugar can make them sticky.
  1. Enjoy!!

This is the end of the Liege waffle recipe. Bon appetit!

Oh, wow, there, that sounds amazing, thank you! Where in the world are you to be up and posting recipes at 2am UK time Grin??
And what is 'pearl sugar'? Would ordinary stuff do?

Also, anybody with ideas for a simple recipe as I think the Liege waffles will be wasted on my brood who will eat 200 in about 3 minutes flat Grin!

Used to use standard pancake batter ie
4oz/120g plain flour
1 egg
1/2pt / 280ml milk
pinch salt

Last time I tried, all the oil I used to grease it, and I didn't use loads, came out when I turned the waffle iron over. It made the most horrible mess, and I've not used it since.

Pearl sugar is just normal sugar - or at least that's what I use. It'll only be wasted on your brood if they can get to them before you do!

Grin Too right, There!

And thanks, tb, that sounds v doable Smile

I'm looking to buy a waffle maker as my partner loves them and is forever buying pre-made waffles from the supermarket. Is there any particular models people can recommend? :)

PacificDogwood · 06/11/2010 19:03

This seems to be the gold standard but Shock at the price!!

There, I made the Liege Waffles today - yum!! Thank you so much for sharing. And it was not half as complicated as I feared Smile.

was the lidl wafflemaker any good PC?

PacificDogwood · 07/11/2010 19:09

It did what it said on the tin.
And it was easy to clean.

So it gets a thumbs up from me - but then again I am a sucker for Lidl gear Blush. Their gingerbread house is fabby...
