Cake decorating stuff

Where do you get yours from? I've bought a few things from Lakeland recently but there are so many bits and pieces that end up costing a fortune.

Could I get away with using a silicone spatula as a smoother and some playdough modelling tools which costs a few pounds rather than fork out £20 for some "proper" ones?

I would think so. How about some of the remainder book shops that have arts and craft stuff. The only problem with plastic ones would be that they might not be food grade plastic. Personally, I would prefer either wood or metal ones.

I use flat butter knives instead of palette knives often.

The main expense are the tins - its worth getting good ones but of course they come in so many sizes!

I'm liking the sound of the playdough modelling tools.....[hgrin]

have you looked at cakecraftworld?
tbh it really depends upon how much usage you will get out of the items really
if you're quite into cake decorating you'll find that you'll pick up items as you go along/have new projects, ideas etc
and this tends to spread out the cost iyswim
what are you particularly interested in bw?
and what do you already have?

Thanks for replies so far.
I've looked at a few online suppliers including eBay. To be honest, I've only done simple cakes and the most spectacular thing that I've done so far is DS's Pirate ship cake.

I've got various colours for colouring sugar paste, some blue glitter and dust that I used for the sea for DS's cake which I found recently wasn't actually edible :(.
I've got some plunger cutters which I will use for the Christmas cake and DD's Peppa Pig Fairy cake.

I'm dithering about whether to get a steel piping kit and some modelling tools which will set me back £40 at least!
