I have a big pan of freshly made chicken stock & a large gammon joint, tell me if this is to odd & won't work but I am thinking:

Chop the gammon joint into bite size pieces & then put them in the slow cooker with some onion & carrot & my stock & leave on low all day?

Serve with mash?

Hmm

I'm well known for good intentions & shit results so feel free to help me out Smile

would it not be too salty? how salty is the stock?

muddleduck · 26/10/2010 12:10

but wouldn't that turn into soup?
you won't lose any liquid from the stock in a slow cooker.

Not sure about salty stock, I just used boiled water, chicken bones, carrots, onions & spring onions?

Should I boil the gammon joint first to get rid of some of the saltyness?

I would try boiling first and then taste it, if too salty boil again. or you could grill it in slices and have it with chips and fried egg! nom.

I slow cook mine using coca cola tastes lovely (sweet) I usually serve with mash, cauli cheese or chips.

I either use Coke or lemonade, not the diet stuff thought. To work it has to be the full of sugar variety. It's moist, tasty and delicious!!

I would boil the gammon in water for an hour, then bung in the oven for a bit (ideally with honey+grainy mustard smeared all over it).

Gammon is best either sugary - contrasts well with the salt, so slow cooked in coke or roasted with honey - or a bit salty with mustard. I soak rathen than boil and then roast on slow with mustard.

Some people like it with juniper-berries but I've never been a fan...

I did see a recipe for spiced gammon involving cinnamon, ginger, cloves and some other stuff but I've not been able to find it since. It sounded yummy.

Oooh gammon in ginger ale is good as well.

bumpybecky · 26/10/2010 13:21

I've used apple juice before and it was yummy :)

theyoungvisiter · 26/10/2010 13:22

I agree with everyone else - total waste of the stock as it won't remotely flavour the gammon and will just end up tasting of salt!

Boil the gammon in water or coke, peel off the skin (leaving the fat), score the fat into diamonds and then pat it with either brown sugar or mustard and roast it.

Use the chicken stock for something else!

I always cook mine in cider. But I have also had one cooked in cherry cola and it was yum!

DurhamDurham · 26/10/2010 13:34

oh Ginger Ale, that sounds lovely. I'll use that next time!
