What can I use instead of white wine vinegar?

The recipe I am doing tonight calls for 2tbsp of white wine vinegar but there was none in the shops. Is there anything that I can use as an alternative or can I make it without? I am making Jamie oliver's 'Piri piri chicken' from his 30min meals recipes and it's for the sauce. I couldn't find any sweet smoked paprika either so I have just settled for ordinary paprika. Will this make a difference do you think? TIA

Not that much. I do find orinary Paprika a bit earthy and not so sweet as smoked.

Have you got any rice wine vinegar you could use or cider vinegar

TheMulledBloodsOnMe · 25/10/2010 15:27

Did you mean 'not that much' in answer to my original question or to the possibility that it will make a difference? I don't have any vinegar apart from ordinary malt vinegar. Can I use this?

Malt vinegar would kill the taste of the dinner, honestly - should only be used for fish and chips!

In the absence of any other vinegar, I'd be tempted to experiment with lemon juice if you have that. It will probably be quite nice with piri piri chicken anyway, even if not in the recipe, and should add the required acidity.

Paprika should be fine - just a subtle difference in flavour really.

Another option might be to try a splash of white wine if you have a bottle open.

I'd be inclined to use wine or sherry as an alternative if you have any. The sauce already has lemon juice in it, and Worcestershire sauce to give it a bit of a kick... um, failing wine then maybe orange or apple juice? I wouldn't use malt vinegar as it will overpower everything.

I do have plenty of lemons so thanks for that and I have some Rose wine, will that work? It's not a sweet Rose.

lemon juice and some HP sauce may work as well (but may need to do it in secret!)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyZombieSlave · 25/10/2010 15:37

Yes, that should do fine. Just use the rose instead of the white wine vinegar and it should all turn out well.

TheMulledBloodsOnMe · 25/10/2010 15:38

Thanks everyone, I'll try the Rose and keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone- Piri piri chicken was a success! Even my 2yr old enjoyed it and it was quite hot! Grin (you should see the state of my kitchen now though!)

Can I leave out the chilli? Im dying to try this, but dont handle spice well.

TheMulledBloodsOnMe · 26/10/2010 18:54

I thought about doing that for next time as none of us are great spicy food lovers and I think it would work fine without the chilli, even halving the quantities would be fine too IMO. I would definatly leave it out of the potatoes next time as they would be delicious with just the feta and coriander.

I thought I would add that it took me 50mins, and not the expected 30mins, as it said on the tin Grin but it was my 1st time and I'm proud that it tasted so delicious. Next time I'll aim for 40mins.

I've been planning to try it (without the tarts or the rocket salad) tonight and even then I've been thinking "30 minutes? In whose universe, exactly...?"
