Are they any good? I have always dismissed them as cheap crap but now I am feeling lazy, not in the mood for measuring lots of ingredients and tempted to give them a try.
Any opinions?

the few I have tried were not very good, they left my teeth with this sort of baking powder fuzziness which is not pleasant.
but then it could be that I bought the wrong mixes...

I use the Tesco 22p sponge mix on top of sliced apples or rhubarb as a quick pudding and found them good for that. (with masses of custard poured over).

I wouldn't use them for a special cake, but I do like them using them with DS.

As with so many things, the better quality you buy, the better quality you get. That said, my mum bought me a chocolate fudge cookie mix in Lidl for 80p and I made them with DS last week - they were really delicious!

asdx2 · 23/10/2010 12:48

The co op ones are great I use them when I can't be bothered either.

Mummy2Bookie · 23/10/2010 13:49

Ooooh lovely. I will pick up one or two and see what we think

Have made Betty crocker cake mix today. It tastes salty. Anyone else come across this?

That doesn't sound good - never tried it, though. Try the Jane Asher ones - I haven't used one for a while but I seem to remember they were ok.

Mummy2Bookie · 25/10/2010 21:10

I haven't seen Jane Asher ones in my local supermarket? What supermarket are they in?

I have heard that stuff is added to them to make them smell nice, but not necessarily taste nice.

Morrisons cookie mix is lovely (not too sweet) - we make the chocolate chip ones loads Blush

Mummy2Bookie · 03/11/2010 18:16

I have just made the Betty croker chocolate fudge brownies. They're lovely. Both dp and I enjoyed then. Taste slightly salty though.

If you can't be bothered to make a cake, would it not just be better to buy a cake? Smile

mollymax · 03/11/2010 18:24

cat64.... I use the sainsburys basics occasionally too, but use two packets to make a decent sized cake.
They taste light and fluffy. Smile

I haven't made one for years, but the saltiness thing reminds me I always find American recipes very salty, I wonder if the salt is different there?

moragbellingham · 04/11/2010 13:07

I think the best ever is M&S chocolate fudge cake.
Never fails and looks exactly like the ones on their shelves.
Pricey at £2.99 but worth it.

Didn't like Betty Crocker's, not sure if it was because of saltiness though.

Mummy2Bookie · 04/11/2010 20:39

Yes it is a bit salty but because I had a chocolate craving I ate it

Interesting about the saltiness of Betty Crocker Brownies. DD made some yesterday and I found them far too sweet. To my mind, there should be some bitterness from the chocolate, but that was missing. Urgh (but I couldn't tell her that)!
