Recipe suggestions for a Retro Feast

Every year we spend New Year with friends, taking it in turns to provide bed and board. There's always a little light-hearted competition so, to counter their 5-course Mexican extravaganza from last year, the DH has proposed we provide a retro feast. [hsmile]

So far, he's suggested Chicken Kiev.[hhmm]

I plan on doing Black Forest Gateau for dessert but beyond that, I would be grateful for any suggestions for canapes, starters, mains, vegetables, wine, drinks, etc etc.

Pleeeeeeaaaaaaassssssssseeee?

Talking of balls can you still get those Cheez footballs? Small wafer balls filled with cream cheese - I think they were made by Jacobs.

What a fun idea for a party. You have to dress in period style.

I used to really like those cheez football things...I think you can still get them around Christmas time so will look out in the shops as they seem to think Christmas is imminent.

I found a copy of that GH book in a charity shop this weekend and see what you mean about chaudfroid chicken maktaitai....quite keen o the recipe for melon and avocado ball salad [hgrin]

Have been thinking more about the music - Demis Roussos and the Carpenters....Grin

Not sure if I am thinking of Party 7s - was child in 70s so have recollection of family parties with strange plastic barrel and various family members imbibing contents. Male ones. Smoking copiously. Female adults also smoked copiously and drank BLUE!!! cocktails. Elderly females drank sherry, or stout.

Have put guests on the case with the retro playlist........

and scored some of those metal bowls for the prawn cocktail in a charity shop. Yippeeee

Oh, someone posted a similar thread ages ago. Loads of suggestions there. Will see if I can find it...

JenaiMwahHaHaHaaaaah · 29/10/2010 12:16

Oh. It was an 1980s drinks party.

As you were...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/10/2010 13:59

Celery sticks with philadelphia cheese. My DM thought she was the height of sophistication having these Wink

CountValiummwahahaha · 30/10/2010 09:52

Jenai- 1980's party is for next year [hgrin]
I really couldn't imagine anything more ghastly than filled-celery-anything....

Appletise came out in the late 70s - height of sophistication. Grin One of the stars of the 70s was fish pie - coley fillet (only 50p a lb) covered with Campbells soup and topped with mash. You see, we were happy with simple pleasures in those days. Wink

Also, for music Englebert Humperdink, Dean Martin, but also Cream, Stones, Al Stewart - year of the cat very big in 77, even Leonard Cohen, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

What about 70s board games - there was Mastermind - the game where you select 4 coloured pegs and the others have to guess what the colours are, and in what order. For next year's 80s feast you can get out the Trivial Pursuit.

ValiummyMummy · 01/11/2010 15:42

tb I bloody love you! I also love Applesite, Dean Martin and Mastermind. Are you still i Spain? Otherwise I could invite you see how authentic I can get the retro experience!!!

clarabellarocks · 01/11/2010 16:00

Cherryaid!

tb · 01/11/2010 16:02

Er no, France, but thany you for the invite and happy to be a virtual presence. Have you seen Abigail's Party with Alison Steadman? Could set the tone, but wouldn't follow through completely, given her dh dies at the end.

However, I would draw the line at pilchard curry. Buerk

ValiummyMummy · 02/11/2010 10:12

So would I- eek!

Have been eyeing up this dress on ebay

tb · 02/11/2010 16:29

Like the dress - go for it. Grin
