I don't mean build one I mean those weird cake tins

I love the 3D teddy bear one .. you need to scroll down

it looks like the cake bakes inside it

will it work or is it a nightmare waiting to happen?

I'd like to know too. Have always had my doubts about these myself (love the crinoline crocheted loo roll holder type dolly one!)

not tried one but it looks kind of cool

it says it has a heat conducting core.... weird

It looks as though it would work ok. The tins are great, but Im not so keen on the decorations. they seem a bit static compared to glace cherries, angelica, choccy buttons and all the other old favourites.

I did a crinoline cake for dd a couple of years ago. Pudding shapped cake, cut a hole in the middle and put Barbie inside!

I've done a teddy one ! Not really 3-d though as it just lies there. It was fine to bake (the recipe was on the tin to get timings right) but to ice it you really need to make little templates for paws etc and then layer up the different coloured icing pieces (ie cover with brown first and then add the details).

that's a good point

ok thinking again

Nightynight do you have the recipe for the pudding shaped cake you made when you did the Barbie cake. I know you can get tin in a bell shaped but they are really expensive so I thought an upside down bell shape in a pudding basin but not sure of the recipe. Also how do you colour ready roll icing? As you can see I've never done anything like this so any help would be appreciated. thanks

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 12/12/2005 19:18

almostachristmasangel · 12/12/2005 19:19

tkjsmum, hi, I just made an ordinary creamed sponge (the recipe where you start by creaming marg and sugar in a bowl), and baked it in a rather deep stainless steel bowl, lined with greaseproof paper. If you allow plenty of time, you can have a second go if the first one doesn't work!
Also, if the shape isnt quite right, you can carve it around a bit. If you don't have a deep bowl, make 2 cakes, one in a shallow bowl, and one in a flat tin, then you can cut a circle out and sandwich it together with the bowl cake to make the skirt.

The dress was white, with piped pink butter icing trim. If I had wanted to colour the icing, I would probably have used a paint brush and painted the food dye on, but I admit Ive never tried that, so not sure how it would turn out. I seem to remember seeing ready coloured icing in the shops, or maybe I am imagining things?
