Cheerios...

As my quest for the perfect breakfast cereal goes on, we have stumbled upon cheerios, and they have gone down very well indeed. The packaging, from what I can see, makes them out to be a healthy choice. Given my past problems, I have resolved to never check packets too closely because I could get obsessed again, so I need to know just how bad Cheerios really are? Is it ok to give them to a 15 month old almost every morning? Obviously, we try different things, but dd really seems to like these, and I'm sharing them too, but are they ok as far as salt, sugar and the usual baddies are concerned? Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but I throw boxes out before I get chance to read them, so any quick opinions would be apreciated,
Thanks,
Littlelamb x

I think they are quite high in salt, Muddles are lower and taste the same.

littlelamb · 11/09/2005 21:39

Ooo thank you, I will add that to my ever expanding list of cereals to try!

littlelamb, they're pretty processed which aint good.
They reckon that muesli or porridge is the best breakfast cereal to go on with. Shredded Wheat and Weetabix ok too.

My DTs love 100% porridge oats (zero salt and sugar)with a variety of fruit mixed in or honey as a treat.

littlelamb · 11/09/2005 21:52

Thank you. I am slowly getting over my aversion to porridge. I have some oats so maybe tomorrow I will try them with some banana and mango. Actually sounds pretty good! Thank you again x

I don't buy them because they're Nestle (sorry).
Nutritionally, about as good as most of the mainstream cereals get, really.

starlover · 11/09/2005 21:56

oooh yes... never buy nestle

actually sainsburys own cheerios are just as nice!

SoupDragon · 11/09/2005 21:59

The Waitrose cheerios are 21% sugar.

Shreddies are better (15% for the Tesco's version)

littlelamb · 11/09/2005 22:06

Wow that has actually shocked me. 21% sugar!? Thats ridiculous. Porridge it is. it's ok to be concerned about that isn't it? 21% is an awful lot of sugar, but then so is 15%. Forgive me if I sound naive, but how can they market that stuff to give the impression it's good for you? I never trusted that bloody Miriam Stoppard, should have known something was up when I saw her mug beaming at me from the box

another good thing about porridge is, it is dirt cheap and lasts for ages, I get a faily big bag for 25p

chipmonkey · 11/09/2005 22:15

Miriam stoppard is on the box!!!!!????????

starlover · 11/09/2005 22:18

hahahah that's why it's good for you!

seeing her on the box is bound to put you off your breakfast!

littlelamb · 11/09/2005 22:28

Yep. From what I remember of it, she was explaining why cheerios were so 'good' for women. hmm. Completely irrelevant, but it looks like she's holding her own face up under the strain of all that big hair

Where did they get the % of sugar.

Skribble · 11/09/2005 22:32

I meant where did you get the information

Amai · 11/09/2005 22:34

Staple diet of many toddlers in england and america little lamb so they cant be that bad.

littlelamb · 11/09/2005 22:39

Amai, you could say the same of Mcdonalds though . MAybe I am overreacting, but food has always been a problem for me, and I do try to be careful to give my dd a good healthy range of food to try. Admittedly, a balanced diet will include sugar, but I don't see hte point of feeding her cereal if it has such a high content of it, I know that one of the reasons I am so anti porridge is because I was bought up on frosties every morning, and porridge just didn't satisfy my resulting sweet tooth.

I think there not too bad got 46 % af recommended ammount of whole grains, still intreged as to where info is on % of sugar.

starlover · 11/09/2005 22:42

here is ingredients

i think refiners syrup is also sugar

starlover · 11/09/2005 22:43

out of 30g 6.1g is sugar!

skerriesmum · 11/09/2005 23:09

Do you mean multigrain Cheerios? Yes, quite high in sugar. The North American ones are not sugary at all, in fact I've seen recipes for "cheerio chicken" using ground-up ones as a coating! Nestle don't make those either. I've never seen them over here though (Ireland).

Skribble · 11/09/2005 23:39

OK never bothered to work that out, but adding the suggested amount of milk adds 5.9g of sugars.

I don't get too worried about cereals I like to go for wholegrains but DD is on cocopos just now without milk. Just happy if they fill up. DS eats about 3 bowls of cereal. So probably gets his quota of sugar, vitamins, fibre etc before 9am every day, still skinny as a rake .

Remember kids do need sugar and fat in their diets so you can't be to strict, I know some parents who have kids on very overly "healthy" diets. Only really healthy for a dieting adult.

lunachic · 12/09/2005 00:03

ban nestle
although my ds occasionally slips them in the trolley they are too sugary imo

lunachic · 12/09/2005 00:06

there s a good range of organic kiddies cereals that tesco have cant remember the make but one type is called orangutang o's and gorilla munch at least the sugars in these arent white/over processed
