DEFINITELY Delia's.

Trust me.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 12/10/2010 21:45

Have you made / tasted both?

Delia's. Nigella's cranberry one was vile.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 12/10/2010 21:46

or is it that delia's is too delish to contemplate another one??

Another vote for Delia - 'tis fab.

tigger1001 · 12/10/2010 21:48

I love the nigella cranberry one! Not tried the delia one so cant compare

happysmiley · 12/10/2010 21:49

Not only does Delia's taste better but it's also so easy. Bung it in a bowl and throw it into a warm oven.

senua · 12/10/2010 21:51

Delia.
Have never tried Nigella's but ... cranberries in mincemeat!? Sounds gimmickyHmm.
The only caveat for Delia's Christmas stuff is that she does tend to over-do the citrus IMO.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 12/10/2010 21:51

oooh.

How close to christmas can i make delia's one so it's good for next year too?

To quote Saint Delia
"It will keep in a cold, dark cupboard indefinitely, but I think it is best eaten within a year of making."

To ensure keeping quality? More booze!Wink

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 12/10/2010 21:59

I'm a bit worried about the booze thing - i'm pregnant and so far planning to make the cake, pudding and mincemeat. I'm going to be plastered after every snack aren't I??

Should I avoid the cake or just not feed it? Will it still taste ok?

OP posts:
happysmiley · 13/10/2010 08:49

Personally, I would still feed the cake and use alcohol in the mincemeat as the alcohol is important for the keeping qualities. But then I guess you would have to limit how much you ate.

taffetacat · 13/10/2010 10:50

Cooking burns off most of the alcohol, but obviously feeding it once its cooked won't, so you could feed it with orange juice to moisten it instead.

I have a large Kilner jar of Delia's I made last year lurking in the back of the fridge.....should be well matured I think.

I think homemade mincemeat needs at least 6 months to mature, any I have made Sept/Oct just aren't as good as the luxury shop bought matured ones as they haven't had long enough to develop.

shelley1977 · 13/10/2010 13:04

I always make Delias its lovely.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 13/10/2010 20:21

oh no - i was going to make some for this christmas - is it not worth it? delia's christmas book mentions starting things in october i thought.

OP posts:
taffetacat · 13/10/2010 21:58

Oh definitely make it and see what you think. Worst comes to worst, keep it for next year and buy in some more for this year.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 13/10/2010 22:25

Can I store it in those glass storage jars with clip down glass lids with a rubber seal do you know? Just wondering if the rubber seal causes problems that a screw top doesn't.

taffetacat · 14/10/2010 06:30

Ooh nice Kilner jars, should be fine. I remember when this happened to me being worried it would be somehow contaminated and not store as well, but I used both screw top and Kilner and it was fine.

However, marmalade never keeps long round here as we love it too much.....!I think I kept most of my jars in the fridge for good measure, but was probably unnecessary.

taffetacat · 14/10/2010 06:32

Oh dear, awake too early and have posted on wrong thread, doh.

Kilner jars are fine, in fact my 12 month old mincemeat in the fridge is in a Kilner jar.....
