what have you got in mind for dd?
can you not make her her b'day cake and also have extra fairy cakes?
you could place the fairy cakes around her b'day cake and decorate them in to tie in with the theme

if you cut a cake in lines rather than wedges you can get good number of pieces out of an 8" cake. but if you bought a 10" tin or a tray bake tin then you would have loads.

GourmetMum - your cake looks fantastic and I will definitely be giving it a try. Have you tried using different sorts of teas (e.g. Earl Grey rather than regular tea) with it and any you'd recommend?

I was going to suggest doing a couple of traybakes and sandwiching them together, covering with buttercream and then decorating with smarties and other small sweets. When DD was 6 and 7 I made number shaped cakes and decorated with buttercream and sweets. The cake went down really well as most parties she goes to have horrible, mass produced shop bought cakes.

The cupcake stand sounds like a great idea. you can either ice with glace icing or buttercream. For piping you just need a piping bag and nozzle, but I'm not sure which high street shops will sell them. I tend to buy things like that from Lakeland.

Also, I find that sponge cakes freeze beautifully so you don't need to leave it until the last minute.

I hope the party goes well.
