Whoopi pies

I am going to a friends for a bit of a girly get together on Saturday and offered to make some sweet treats.
Well i tried whoope pies for the first time at the weekend and thought they would be perfect.

Now for my dilema...a friend of a friend is coming too and she has just started a cake/cupcake making business. And she is very critical of others efforts.

So.....has anyone tried making whoopie pie? What is the best recipe?? and how can i make them look extra impresive??

I am generally ok at baking but not so good with the decoration side.

Any advice

they are so yum are'nt they! i keep meaning to make them but haave'nt yet, have seen plenty of recipes on the net though.

Katerlina · 11/10/2010 16:09

Jolly - I advise you to do the worst possible job of decorating and then stick one on the end of your 'friend of friend's' nose if she criticises... is this masterchef or a get together?!? Stuff her and her cupcakes...

blueberryboybait · 11/10/2010 16:14

Jolly I have a great easy recipe will fish it out for you ......

blueberryboybait · 11/10/2010 16:21

I use this one - delicious and easy to do. The don't really need decoration - I leave the icing on the outside off as it can be too much.

notasize10yetbutoneday · 11/10/2010 16:33

Blueberry I too am looking for a recipe for these but your link didn't seem to work unfortunately?

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/10/2010 16:35

Oh God, I've just eaten 3 M&S chocolate chip and vanilla ones. Blush I feel a bit sick and ashamed as I was doing so well.

I have made them before though, and they were great! I think the recipe was in the Sunday Times and I've probably kept it somewhere. I'll have a look this evening.

Pumpkinbummum · 11/10/2010 16:37

Oh I just got sent a whoopie pie book as a recomendation on Amazon, are they really good?

going · 11/10/2010 16:37

Whoopie pies are best left undecorated, otherwise they are far to sickly.

4andnotout · 11/10/2010 16:38

I love whoopie pies, reading threads like this makes me wish I wasn't on a diet!

blueberryboybait · 11/10/2010 16:40

Notasize10 - it works for me when I am logged in and logged out.

phipps · 11/10/2010 16:40

Forget trying to impress this other woman. She is just someone who makes cakes and makes a living out of it.

Whoppi pies look amazing but are just glorified fairy cakes tbh, I would pick something else.

muggglewump · 11/10/2010 16:40

this is the opnly recipe I've tried but it's great.
I prefer them filled with cream rather than marshmallow but then I don't really have a sweet tooth.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/10/2010 16:46

Actually, Muggle, I think that's the recipe I tried too, not the ST one. They were delish but very sweet. Cream's a great idea.

Jollymummy2 · 11/10/2010 17:16

I am glad i am not the only addict. M&S toffee ones are my fav.

Phipps...i am open to suggestions. wanted something that didnt need plate/cutlery but mainly something yummy scrummy and a bit naughty!

I have googled but there seem to be a number of different recipes and my waistline cant cope with me trying out all the different ones - however tempted i am Wink

OOh I saw them in Asda at the weekend - carrot cake ones with a carrot decoration on top.

phipps · 11/10/2010 21:37

Something savoury? You wouldn't be competing with Miss Critical then. Might be better for your waist line too.

Jollymummy2 · 12/10/2010 09:05

Yum Fimbo, I love carrot cake, might have to get some. Research purposes only obviously Wink

Phipps - the host is doing the savoury option, cheese fondu i think.

Thought about possibly chocie brownies...

I tried making them for DD's birthday.

They weren't a great success, to be honest. Quite sickly and difficult to eat as the filling splurged everywhere.

I should have stuck to cup cakes....

SE13Mummy · 12/10/2010 18:59

I used this recipe from Sainsbury when I baked them for DD2's birthday. Bearing in mind that I am definitely not a 'master' baker they came out brilliantly; looked good, tasted fantastic and were enjoyed by all. The marshmallow cream was worth the faff as I've had them since but with icing in the middle which is rather sickly sweet, even for my sweet tooth.

taffetacat · 12/10/2010 20:20

I wouldn't go up against an expert. I'd get her to bring some cakes - ask her if she'd be prepared to do some taste testing or guinea pig stuff on you or something, and you do something completely different - some funky dips and stuff maybe.

Failing that, I am hopeless at making things look good, but even I found <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=4.bp.blogspot.com/_dW07iJ-vVKI/TJZrgIMTz2I/AAAAAAAABBM/f6TlXVJkKoE/s1600/pink-cake-pops.jpg&imgrefurl=adventureswithalissa.blogspot.com/&usg=__N6s08AEmpRUVcFxpzeI7Tstjj04=&h=400&w=600&sz=17&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=wqf9piS0xDLehM:&tbnh=149&tbnw=208&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcake%2Bpops%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1362%26bih%3D583%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=131&vpy=88&dur=93&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=194&ty=107&ei=qLS0TPSXGYfQjAfy5IS3Aw&oei=hrS0TN3HIYKEswbetqmqCA&esq=4&page=1&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">cake pops easy. If you buy ready coloured chocolate buttons you can coat them easily in say baby pink and then do sprinkles/edible glitter/whatever. There are loads of tips on youtube or I can fish out the cake pops thread from a few weeks back.

Jollymummy2 · 13/10/2010 09:26

Ooohh taffetacat they look scrummy.A recipe would be fab if you have one.
Hhhmmm now in a real dilema as just found a recipe for chocolate cherry cheescake brownies....
So much yummy stuff, maybe i could make a few different things as a taste test for treats to give as gifts at Christmas

taffetacat · 13/10/2010 10:12

Well you can either go to the trouble of making your own madeira cake and then make it into crumbs in the food processor or you can cheat like I did and buy a Sainsbo's basics one.....you then mix it with a good few tablespoons of buttercream icing ( again I cheated and bough Betty Crocker Choc Fudge frosting but that was very lazy )until you get a truffly texture.

Then roll into balls and put lolly sticks in and freeze for 30 mins. Then melt coloured choc buttons of choice and dip pops in, tapping off excess as you go. Add sprinkles before choc dries. Use a polystyrene board or similar to spear pops into to dry up straight.

Jollymummy2 · 15/10/2010 21:11

Ok so i gave up on the whoopie pies and decided on...........

Cake pops, without the sticks, so cake balls really! And some cheesecake balls too.

I think i will probably have to make more tomorrow though as i taste tested a few and well, they are a little bit moreish Grin
