So, how much would you be prepared to pay for a largish free range, fully organic turkey?

Just interested as have been looking into it and want to check I'm not being ripped off.

I paid a shocking £65.00 two Christmas's ago. I nearly fainted when he told me the price.... It was 12/13lbs and delicious!!

I think we paid about £70 for a 14lb in London. It was that nice breed - but I cannot for the life of me remember the name - Bronze?

TwiningsConfusions · 09/10/2010 19:10

Interesting, I've been quoted £48 so that's not bad at all

I think I paid about £30 or £40 or there or thereabouts. turkey big enough to feed 10 or 12. Direct from the farm.

That sounds like a good price. We go to my parents for Christmas and I think she paid about £80 for a 20lber.

£8 for a large half price frozen bird from the supermarket. After defrosting, stuff the body cavity with a couple of halved onions and lemons, plenty of seasoning and butter. Cover the body of the turkey with streaky bacon, cook in a roasting tray with white wine in the bottom.

I challenge anyone to tell the difference between my £10 bird and an expensive free range one, my MIL couldn't and she can be particular.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/10/2010 09:18

Mrcj - I expect your bird will have been reared in awful conditions, something which I'm not prepared to support no matter how cheap it is.

And I am pretty sure that I could tell the difference.

Not very keen on turkey, so we get an free range capon which about the same size, costs about £25 for one that serves 6-8 people.

Northernlurker · 10/10/2010 09:33

Mrc - my mil thought the same as you a few years ago. She was wrong - it was absolutely dire.

I think we spent about £45 for ours last year. We got it from the farm shop and had been able to see it pottering around with it's mates for the last couple of months.

We are having venison £15 per kilo, or else we have fillet of beef yum yum. After Christmas I buy the turkey's that have not sold [local farm shop really they should take orders and slaughter only x amount] and freeze for the rest of the year so I don't mind getting an expensive cut we would never buy. But £40 is a really good price hope it comes cleaned out and plucked [another reason for venison/beef choice]
