Afternoon tea

We have dh's family coming for tea on Sunday including his uncle and aunt who are over from Canada.

I want to make it really nice for them so this is the menu:

Home-made whoopie pies (never made them before but have recipe!)
Home-made choc mousse (dd2's contribution)
Home-made lemon mousse (dd1's contribution)
Scones (not home-made) with jam and clotted cream
Finger sandwiches with smoked salmon, cucumber and egg
A nice savoury tart or quiche
Possibly crudites with dips

Does this sound ok? Anything else I should add/not have?

Possibly a small salad (always nice to see a bit of greenery I think)

Definitely new potatoes with butter. Usually very popular with everyone and is a great filler of gaps, in the manner of bread and butter. Speaking of which, a smallish french stick and butter is usually welcome.

Bear in mind not everyone likes fish and/or eggs! Maybe a cheese salad sandwich or two?

Coleslaw? Again, not everyone has it but it I find it always disappears Grin

Love the idea of the scones. I'm sure they'll be popular too.

Enjoy your tea!

PS if you are aiming for a traditional sort of afternoon tea, then you would have bread and butter, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and some other sort of sweet items such as flapjacks. (I wouldn't include lemon and chocolate mousse in afternoon tea though (sorry - sure it's fine, it's just that I think of mousse is something you have to really be in the mood for. that's just my personal opinion though!).

If you are looking for a heartier tea, more buffet-style in content but where everyone is sat down around a table, then definitely include the quiche, potatoes etc.

Thanks Girlsworld - I wasn't sure about the mousses either but dd2 was keen to make the choc one and dd1 loves lemon so I couldn't really refuse!

Have just made the whoopie pies - hard work but they look great!
