Slow cookers - which one?

I really, really want a slow cooker. Actually, I really want an Aga, but that's never going to happen and the slow cooker seems like a good compromise. Grin I need one that will do a family of four, is pretty cheap and will not take up too much room on the kitchen work top. Oh, and I'd rather not have a stainless-steel type finish. I also need to wow dh with it, because he's not convinced.

What do you recommend?

can i HJ for a min, sorry OP.
Could i use a deep casserole dish in the oven at a low temp instead of a slow cooker?

If so what temp,, needs to be put on about 7am and eaten at 5.30pm

Yes, you can use a casserole dish in the oven - cast iron is the best to use as it distributes the heat very evenly and holds heat well and obviously it has to have a lid. Ikea do a good one. I am not sure on the temperatures though, perhaps someone else can help? I also think you might end up using a lot more electricity than you would with a separate slow cooker but the oven method would be good if you didn't intend to slow cook very often.
