Hi I am new to Mum's net and I really need some help for you catering wonder women ....

I have got 20-25 Mums from school coming for drinks and nibbles next weekend. I really need some good quick impressive but easy canape ideas. If you know any tasty 'cheating' party nibble ideas I'd be really grateful.

I have never done a party like this before and I am starting to panic. All ideas gratefully received.

Bruschetta- french stick chopped up with chopped and herbed tomatoes and onions on them with cheese on top and plonked in the oven (can be served hot or cold.
Goats cheese canapes. (I have never shared my most favourite nibble recipe before!) puff pastry cut into squares (small enought to hold) smear of pesto, tiny bit of goats chees and a slice of cheery tomato on top-again bung in oven.
Alternativly shops are full of xmassy nibbles so I would go to iceland/sainsburys/m&s and but theres then tart them up a bit to look homemade Grin

buy ready made mini tart cases from waitrose, fill with lovely things like feta and cherry tomatoes, caremalised onion and goats cheese etc etc

bowls of nice olives

a cheese board with a selection of cheese and nice crackers and grapes and apples

or, lots of cucumber sandwiches. Everyone likes cucumber sandwiches.

Dh and I had some frozen canapes from Lidl last night (meant to keep for Christmas but had as last minute dinner) They were actually quite nice. I was suprised as I was half expecting the tastless crap MIL serves up from Iceland. They were cheap too!

You can buy big jars of plain olives, black and green, and make your own marinade for them, I would chop up lots of parsley and garlic and add this to a big bowl of black olives with lemon juice and olive oil.

Or add chillies and coriander.

Or coriander, cumin and paprika.

Numerous ways to make plain olives into deli-style fancy olives.

Also, if the nibbles aren't at a meal time and people are not going to be hungry and expecting a meal, I would do simpler nibbles like japanese crackers and nuts (nice salted roasted ones) and bowls of nice crisps etc.

Lidl and Aldi frozen canapes are much much better than iceland crap.

You could also make cheese twists. Buy puff pastry, roll it out thinly, grate nice cheese over it (maybe a mix of mature cheddar and parmesan) sprinkle on some smoked paprika, cut the puff pastry into long thin strips, twist up and bake. Lovely.

Take some Philly cheese (or equivalent smooth cheese) spread on a wheat cracker with a dash of sweet chilli sauce

get a thin baguette and slice thinly
put slices on a tray and sprinkle with a little olive oil and bake in the oven for 10 mins on a low heat - bits of bread now look like posh crackery things

top with :
mayo mixed with lemon juice and pop a prawn on top
olive tapanade from a jar topped with 1/2 a cherry tom
bit of cream cheese and a bit of parma ham

etc etc
good luck

Ikea sell croustades - very thin crispy cases you can easily fill with coronation chicken, for example.

Garlic triangles - mix together butter, garlic and herbs . Cut crusts off slices of bread, spread both sides with above butter. Cut into triangles, oven 10 to 15 mins.

Incidentally my kids love this when I don't have garlic bread in

pinwheel sandwiches

If you want to posh up your cheese straws, try blue cheese ones with snippets of dried fig in, or mature cheddar creamed with a little Marmite (as in, mash the marmite with the finely grated cheddar and as much unsalted butter as you need to make it spreadable). Both are great with red wine. For white wine, try pesto and goats' cheese, or sun-dried tomato pesto with parmesan.

For a crowd, nothing is easier or more welcome than a good cheese board as suggested above (to make this look generous, offer lots of one or two cheeses that are at their best, instead of lots of little pieces for people to choose from) with all the trimmings (shaved celery, grapes, walnut bread, water biscuits, quince paste, chutney, unsalted butter), alongside a plate of meats - salamis, cured ham, pate, hand-carved cooked ham, saucisson, chorizo etc, with accompaniments like olives, cornichons, baby pickled onions (I have a real fondness for these), sundried tomatoes, and lots of warm baguettes (the ones you finish off yourself at home are ideal for this as you can keep them coming.)

All of this can be done in advance, apart from the bread, because it is just a matter of judicious purchasing, then arranging on a plate.

Hope you have a great time!

Cheese sounds like a fab plan.
