Diet for a 1yo

Serendippy · 29/09/2010 10:06

My DD is coming up 1 and eats:
Cereal and fruit or scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast
Sandwich or rice cakes with cheese, peanut butter etc for lunch
Homemade dinner usually involving meat and veg for tea.
Snacks of cheese, fruit, veg sticks, breadsticks, mini rice cakes depending on meals
Puddings of yoghurt, fruit or custard.

Does this sound about right? Had loads of advice on weaning for 6 months but a bit clueless about toddler diet! Can anyone offer a bit more variety (don't want to cook for lunchtime so must be easy)

Thanks

It sounds like a wonderful diet for most people let alone a 1 yr old Grin

For the variety, how about trying her on some different types of cracker or bread (such as rye, oatcakes, soda bread, potato bread) or have a soup when it's cold?
Almond butter is also a nice alternative to PB, and hummus maybe would go down well?

Oooh, hummus, good idea. It is a wonderful diet, I would be in great shape if I ate what she does, shame I eat junk! Will try crackers as well, thank you.

Smile Keep up the good work! And it's never too late to start eating the same as her Wink

Sounds perfect :)

You could try her with mini bagels or just regular bagels cut into handy sizes for her. Wraps are good too, DD had a chicken, cheese and salsa wrap for lunch today, she loved it... so did my floor!

Avocado is another good topping for rice cakes.

I love bagels so will give them a try. A wrap would probably just end up on the floor but could be fun trying...

I have on occasion tried her on things that she really didn't like and then had to give her toast for tea as had nothing else prepared. To avoid this again, is there anything your 1yo really doesn't like?
(Nut roast is the example which springs to mind, but I thought it was delicious Grin)

DD will pretty much eat anything thrown her way Grin no idea who she gets that from Wink

She goes through phases though, one week she'll love my fish pie, the next it's like I'm feeding her rat poison. It's all trial and error really. There's a few things she was never really keen on which she now loves, but only because I kept offering them to her. Remember it can take up to 10 tries for them to decide whether or not they like or don't like something so you just have to keep offering and hoping that one day they will give in see sense Grin

What do you give her when she doesn't want what's offered? Am all for encouraging trying new things but on the whole she is an excellent eater and don't want mealtimes to be a battle. Also, don't want to do the 'If you don't want it, go hungry' thing as not only will she not understand but I don't want her waking in the night through hunger

I try and encourage her to eat it, but I'll never force it on her, if it's obvious she really doesn't want it then I'll just offer her a sandwich, cubed cheese, pieces of meat etc - things I know she will happily eat at any time.

Some days she just really isn't very hungry come dinner time, and nothing I offer will be really touched. If that happens, I just offer her some supper of toast or cereal a bit later on which she normally gobbles right up :)
