please.

My parents just dropped by for a few hours, and my mum's left me a bag of cooking apples. Would LOVE to make some apple crumble (NO I'm not making pie for those of you that hate crumble ) but I don't know how.

Anyone got a simple, easy and foolproof method??

this works for me....
slice and peel apples and gently fry them in saucepan with butter, sugsr and dash orange juice.
a teaspoon of cinnamon is nice too.

crumble topping...
120g sr flour and 90g butter in a bowl and rub together with fingers till crumbly.
Then stir in 3 tbsp light muscavado sugar and 3tbsp white sugar.

Chill the crumble mixture for 10 mins

cook at gm 5 for half an hour

I'm off to buy some apples...!

QueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2005 14:49

Thanks spy - shall wait to see if anyone else has any other variations and then pick one.

(I didn't have to buy the apples - mum picked them off the tree in their garden )

I use Delia's recipe, sounds v similar to Spykids, altho I use some wholemeal flour as well (about 1/4 of total flour) just for a bit of healthiness!
LOVE crumble...made a fab blackberry and apple one at weekend...yum!

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:06

OK, Delia's recipe...
Spiced Apple and Raisin Crumble (would work just as well without raisins)
2lb Bramley apples peeled/cored and sliced
3oz raisins
1oz soft brown sugar
1tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves (try nutmeg if no cloves)
2 tbsp water

Cook all this gently in a saucepan until soft and fluffy, then sprinkle with Crumble topping...

8oz plain or wholewheat flour
3oz butter
3-4oz soft brown sugar

Put flour in large mixxing bowl, then add butter and rub into flour gently, then stir in sugar and cover the apple mixture
Cook for 30-40 mins until tinged brown on gas mark 4/180c

I like to use half flour and half oats in the crumble. I whizz it all up in the food processor and it has a fab texture.

4oz flour (plain, white)
4oz porridge oats
3oz butter
3oz brown sugar

Yum!

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:30

NOt tried oats BBS, but do normally do 1/2 plain and 1/2 wholemeal flour for bit of texture...must look for some oats....

Tommy · 06/09/2005 15:32

Have you tried Nigels Slater's crumble ?
It was in the Observer this week - he's pretty reliable usually

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:34

That sounds good and v easy!

QueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2005 15:34

Peel, core and slice apples. Put in pie dish, with a half a tablespoon of flour and a couple of tablespoons of water sprinkled over. Also sprinkle over a wee bit of cinnamon and some sugar.

Crumble: 4 heaped tablespoons of flour and two ounces of butter. Rub/cut together, or whizz in a food processor. Mix in 2 rounded tablespoons of sugar (demerara if you want a wee bit of extra crunch). Maybe mix in a wee bit of cinnamon too if you like (I just love the combination of cinnamon and apple ).

Spread over the apples and put in the oven for c. half an hour at 200C.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 06/09/2005 15:37

same as prettybird - SO easy!

I prefer to stew down the apples a bit before adding crumble as sometimes the apples dont go QUITE soft enough for my liking!

emkana · 06/09/2005 20:43

Core and peel apples, cut into pieces. Put in ovenproof dish, sprinkle over sugar, plus cinammon if desired.
Mix 200 g of flour with 100 g butter/margarine and 100 g sugar, until crumbly. Spread over apples. Bake, enjoy.

Passionflower · 06/09/2005 21:53

Do the crumble in the food processor, it's just as good and you don't get it under your finger nails.

Prettybird · 07/09/2005 12:44

So, QoQ - did you have ingredianets for the simpler versions? - and if so, have you made it yet?

Hope the money situtation gets better soon.
