Can I add guiness to a slow cooker?

Making a beef stew tonight. Can't find the instructions for the slow cooker so not sure if doing this will make it boil over or explode or something.

It has a loose lid-it's actually called a "crock pot" but cooks the meat slowly. Can I add guiness now or should I put it in maybe an hour before the end of cooking. Will that make the alcohol evaporate. Small children will be eating it tooGrin.

yes will be fine add it now to let all the flavours mingle

Guiness is great in stews - our boys love 'rich' stews with no affects. I'd add early to help get the flavours in. They also like the chocolate guiness cvake by Nigella too.

I did this last week - it was fine but we found it to be a bit bitter - I prefer lager TBH.

Add a touch of brown sugar too to make it sweeter or make sure lots of root veg too like carrots etc

It can be a bit bitter if you use a whole can - I usually mix about a third of a can with beef stock/water or whatever. What to do with the rest of the can? Ooh, decisions, decisions ... Grin

or tomato puree can help...

THanks for tip SDD. I love rich stews but find stout makes it too bitter. It has never occured to me to add sugar to food with stout in it. Doh!

For some reason, I misread this title as 'can I add a guinea pig to a slow cooker.'

Thanks everyone! Didn't manage to check this before I added some guinea pig guinessGrin but it turned out ok.

I think the tip about the sugar sounds great, thankyou SexydomesicatedDad, will try that next timeSmile.
