Wine

I'm hoping this is the right area....

How long does an unopened bottle of (red) wine last for? Have been going through the bottles and have some dated 2004, so thinking we got them in 2005/06 (I remember DH coming home with the case, and we got married in 2005). I want to use them in some hampers, but don't fancy giving anyone alcohol poisoning.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Immediately I thought "wine improves with age, it lasts forever as long as it's stored correctly" then I thought "oh, I wonder if that's only the special, good wines (ones that I can't afford)"
So this is a bump really as the only thing I would say is open one and try it!

If this is serious; nobody would get a 'wine poisoning', however, some wines are better drunk young, so, Google is your friend...

It won't poison anyone (well no more than wine normally does anyway Grin). Depending on the wine, it may be past its best.

Is serious -- just don't want anyone to be sick from drinking old/dodgy wine. I personally don't drink, so not sure what tastes good, how long drink should last, etc. I shall Google my type and check before passing on or getting rid of.

Many thanks!

You could always cook with it! Open a bottle and try it - or find someone that does like wine. If you re-cork wine or use a vaccum stopper red wine wil keep ok for a few days after opening.

Worst case wine has gone to vinegar so you can taste it.
