What to do with green tomatoes??

We grew various types of tomato outdoors, as we don't have a greenhouse, and now it's obvious that some of them are destined never to ripen. Sad Some of them are nice and large slicing types, others are smaller or cherries. Mostly green with a flush of orange on some.

What can I do with the things? I hate to waste them, after having nurtured them all summer. Chutney? (A very small pot! but I suppose I could bulk it out with onions.) I know about fried green tomatoes but fancy something else.

TIA. Smile

I put some in a brown paper bag on the window sill, and they all ripened. Failing that green tomato chutney is really yummy.

Put them in a shoebox or empty drawer with a ripe banana, they will ripen in a couple of days.

I brought in all my big green ones and stuck them under my glass cheese dome and over a week they have all ripened. So much so my much longed for green tomato chutney will be a green and red version.

BTW, you don't need loads of green toms for a chutney - eg my recipe has plenty of cooking apples and shallots in too.

There was a thread in gardening recently about ripening them in a polythene bag with a ripe banana - here

Thanks, good tips! I did ripen one that had already started reddening and then fell off the stalk, but it went a bit mushy. I'll try the banana-in-a-box one, but I think I'll look for green tomato chutney recipes too.

Delia's is good.
