How the chuff do you cut a lattice?

My recipe explains but I don't understand at all. It says cut 2cm lines, staggering each...Confused

I think I have worked out that I don't sit and cut little diamonds out of the surface.

Don't you just cut lots of strips of pastry and lay them over each other? Or am I a dullard?

littleomar · 20/09/2010 18:22

ok so

parallel, but staggered lines of little slits, then pull it apart to make holes

um, maybe like a christmas decoration or something

littleomar · 20/09/2010 18:22

sorry that's rubbish. it would be easie4r to show you. youtube?

jooseyfruit · 20/09/2010 18:24

like this!

hobbgoblin · 20/09/2010 18:26

well, gingerkirsty that is what I might've done but I think it would get a bit bulky and overly homespun looking for requirements! Fine for stuffing in gob immediately after baking (is mincemeat lattice thingies) though. I need these for public consumption unfortunately.

littleomar, these lines...are they horizontal? I think I may be getting this, does the slit just turn itself into a diamond? (Doesn't mean that to sound as it does, but I have an unfortunate tendency to find a double entendre in anything).

God that 10 quid could be money well spent I reckon. I have probably frazzled more than 1000 brain cells thinking about this so what's a thousand pennies?

you can get them cheaper than that though.

gingerkirsty · 20/09/2010 19:17

Aaah i see what littleomar is saying - looked on youtube but they are all the basic version I described above - best thing to look at is the product joosey linked to - the pic shows really well how to cut the slits, and if you just stretch the pastry out gently they will form the diamonds :)

Do lakeland plastics have them? Found this there

Can't remember where I've seen the others though

jooseyfruit · 20/09/2010 19:27
