Hi. On a cookery course the other day I was shown a wierd looking thing (sort of like a colander with a handle) to make mashed potato. Does anyone know what this is and where I can get one? Someone also said there is another implement you can get to make mashed potato - does anyone have an idea what the alternative is? Thanks

a mouli or a ricer?

"Colander with a handle" sounds like a mouli. If it looked like a giant garlic crusher, it was probably a potato ricer?

Oh I discovered potato ricers last year - no more lumpy mash, they are bliss. I got a stainless steel one that goes in the dishwasher from John Lewis and use it every week. Its brilliant.

How do you keep your mash warm if you use a ricer? Sorry for hi jack

I just put it through the ricer quickly, melt butter into it and add some hot milk and it stays hot.

If it cools down slightly, I just put pan back on heat and keep stirring with a wooden spoon so it doesn't catch on the bottom.

Ricers are fab - would never go back to a plain potato masher Smile

I make it in a bowl and then give it a quick zap in the microwave. Works a treat!
