Lasagne - how many 'layers' do you do?

I can only get 2 layers of pasta sheets, 3 meat and 2 bechamel sauce.

Should I be using a deeper dish?

I use a loaf tin - that way I get 4 or even 5 layers of pasta in. Yum!

oh that's a good idea Free. I have one of those. Thought 2 layers of pasta was a bit stingy. Will remember that for next time.

From the bottom up I go sauce, lasagne, meat, lasagne, sauce, meat, lasagne, sauce. So three layers of lasagne, two of meat.

From the bottom up sauce, lasagne, meat, sauce, cheese, lasagne, meat, sauce, cheese, lasagne, sauce cheese. The dish is about 5cm/2" deep. I put sauce on the bottom to stop the pasta sticking. If I'm feeling like it I make the lasagne, too. Else I just use whatever packet stuff we've got.

I used to only do about 2 layers bfore teh white sauce. Then one day I saw a lasagne recipe froma US site, which had about a zillion layers! It looked so fab, I now make it in my loaf tin and do about 6 or 7 layers, with only a little filling between each one. I only put white sauce on the last layer.

God my lasagne is a mutant beast then! I do (bottom up) pasta, meat 'n' sauce, pasta, White sauce, meat 'n' sauce, pasta, White sauce, cheese, herbs. But it's about a mile squared!

muggglewump · 17/09/2010 15:34

Ooh, I might try the loaf tin.
I sometimes skip a layer of pasta and use someone lightly fried courgettes or cooked spinach to get more veg in and lighten it a bit.

I like JO's which uses creme fraiche instead of the bechemel and has a layer of tomato slices on the top.

bellavita · 17/09/2010 15:51

Try to do 5.

I go bechemel sauce, bolognese and a sprinkling of mozzarella then a sheet of lasagne and so on, finishing with a sheet of lasagne topped with bechemel sauce and cheese.

My Italian grandma used to do about 8 layers.

Rockbird · 17/09/2010 19:01

My Italian friend's mother made really weird (but bloody lovely) lasagne. She used to chop it all up so it had biggish triangles of lasagne sheets, and then add hard boiled egg and peas. It was a sort of mixed up lasagne but so nice.

Dp will use about 8-10 layers.

Very skimpy on the meat sauce which is always mixed in with bechamel.

I should like to add a vegetarian option that I've found is quite tasty. So, from the bottom up, mine usually goes

cooked lentils with onion
pasta
courgette or aubergine with garlic and oregano
pasta
spinach, mushroom, ricotta with salt, pepper, oregano
pasta
tomato sauce
cheese.
