Shopping in Sainsbury's the other day went to pick up a tin of coconut milk and it was nearly £2, last time I bought the stuff it was around £1.20, also noticed tinned organic tomatoes rocketing in price, have to shop at Lidl's in future.

Last time I went shopping(to Sainsbos) I bought coconut milk, the organic one was cheaper than the standard one!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 16/09/2010 17:04

I noticed this too, was there a massive coconut drought or something Confused?
Our local small-ish Sainbo's has an 'ethnic' shelf with massive sacks of basmati rice etc, and this had tins of coconut milk for much cheaper.

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 16/09/2010 17:05

Don't know if it's the same in Sainburys, but in our local tesco, they have coconut milk in one part of the supermarket and it's really expensive and then they have it in the world foods aisle where they have all the polish/asian foods etc and it is half the price. Unbelieveable.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 16/09/2010 17:07

yeah, I saw that last week. Tesco has them in the ethnic section for much cheaper. 70p?

AgentProvocateur · 16/09/2010 17:51

This is the only thing I have noticed rising in price. I quite often buy it on its own, so I know that it used to be 80p-ish, but has rocketed.

If you have a Chinese supermarket near you, it's about 50p a can in there. I stock up regularly.

Pekkala · 16/09/2010 17:54

I get the blocks of coconut from the Tesco world food section - 26p last time I think

said · 16/09/2010 17:56

It's about 50p in Quality Save. Spices are always much cheaper in the world foods bit as well

MegBusset · 16/09/2010 17:57

Our local 99p Store has 2 for 99p! Otherwise yes, get from the ethnic cooking aisle, or local Asian grocers.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/09/2010 18:01

Can you make coconut milk from blocks of coconut

PrettyFeckinVacant · 16/09/2010 18:41

Yes I agree - the price has just gone through the roof. I think this is how companies like Tesco/Sainsbury's make their money - they have really tight margins on the everyday stuff, like bread etc but then they charge way over the top for items that you are going to put into your basket because you need it and it is convenient.

Tesco did have the coconut milk reduced to about £1.10 not long ago but I have just checked and it is back to £1.93 Shock Shock

lilolilmanchester · 16/09/2010 20:49

Said, I bought coconut milk from quality save recently too, think it was 49p = and no different to that I've bought from Sainsburys or Tesco.

bacon · 16/09/2010 23:09

I too noticed this in Sainsbugs. £2! I bought a block instead (just add boiling water). The local Asian shop does sell it cheaper but havent been for a while....shocking!

TrillianAstra · 16/09/2010 23:13

I have the coconut milk powder - about £2 for a box and you can make much more than a can's worth.

I know that real milk when powdered is not the same, but you're cooking witht he coconut milk anyway, not putting it on your cereal.

Ishouldhavechosenagoldfish · 16/09/2010 23:20

Coconut in a block lasts loads longer too - unless your DS is like mine and has a taste for lumps of the stuff ... Hmm

magimix · 20/09/2010 21:00

Bought 2 cans of CM @ 45p each today from Tesco's asian food area think it was on offer.

moragbellingham · 21/09/2010 21:43

I thought I'd posted this title when I read it!
(Must've done it in my head)

My DH was not in the least bit interested in the price of coconut milk in Sainsbury'sConfused.Blue Dragon?

I have started getting mine in Tesco for about 50p too. It's in the Asian & Caribbean sections at ours.

MackerelOfFact · 22/09/2010 09:52

My Tesco local has some Carribean brand for 45p a tin, Iceland do the same one for 50p. Otherwise, yes, extortionate. A tin of Blue Dragon brand coconut milk is £2.10 in the same shop (and usually congealed, ick).

MollysChambers · 22/09/2010 09:55

A lot of things seem to be going up in price. I'm finding my weekly shop to be much more expensive - even though I'm making more of an effort to meal plan.
