Did anyone see the article on canned tuna in the times magazine yesterday? Saying that it is not a good source of omega 3 oils due to the canning process, but also implying that it is not safe for children due to the high levels of mercury which once absorbed can lead to learning difficulties. I have been giving my 9 month old ds tuna for about a month as had been advised that he could start having oily fish, although I knew it is advised not to have too much whilst pg, it never occured to me that it might not be safe for him to eat now. I am worried it's been doing him more harm than good - or is it yet another food scare?!

I haven't seen the article, but I would lean towards another food scare.

I'm very much at the stage of reading nothing to do with what we should and shouldn't eat!

the thing about canned tuna has been about for ages. When I was pregnant (dd now 22 months) it was advised to monitor intake of tuna due to the mercury levels. This was the advice for during pregnancy:

'You should eat no more than two medium-size cans of tuna, or one fresh tuna steak per week. This advice is based on two medium-size cans with a drained weight of 140g per can and a steak weighing about 140g cooked or 170g raw. This is comparable to six rounds of tuna sandwiches or three tuna salads per week.

This advice is given because of the levels of mercury in tuna fish. At high levels, mercury can harm a baby's developing nervous system.

For the same reason, avoid eating shark, swordfish and marlin'

I was also aware that canned tuna does not count as an oily fish due to the canning process but it doesnt matter cos dd wont eat fish anyway!

I dont know how it relates to giving your dd tuna now though - sorry!

according to the article there is advise in place regarding not giving children under 10 swordfish, shark etc, but nothing relating to tuna.
Apart from anythign else - he enjoys it and I am really trying to get him used to fish!
