Do you need to use wax discs for jams & chutneys?

Do I need to use wax discs for storing jams & chutneys etc.? I have got some kilner jars but have realised that the discs will not fit onto the jars. Should I just put some ontop of the jam/chutney instead?
Or can I buy special disc's for kilner jars?

I just use grease proof paper cut into circles.

wax discs are meant to go on the surface of the jam anyway - it's cellophane that goes over the top.

I pot and seal jam hot so it forms a decent vacuum seal as it cools - I usually use old jars with those pop-up buttons in the lids but have done some kilner too - and don't bother with wax discs.

As above, I don't use the wax discs and cellophane for jam either. I do what Mrs Badger does, pot hot jam so that a seal forms as it cools. Same with chutneys, actually, but they don't need a disc anyway.

as above - pot jam when hot use kilner or pop up button lids. chutney def doesn't need it.

wax discs = faff

Thank you all for your help, for those that don't use discs how long will they keep for before opening?

Just before you pot the jam, pour boiling water over the jam jar lids in a bowl. Take them out with tongs and screw straight on to the sterilized jars. The jam/pickles will keep for years.
