Runner beans - help!!!!

Neighbour given us a bucket load. How the devil do you get the stringy bit out. seem to remember they have one and it has be be removed.

keeps breaking off!

Peel the thin sides -- I can never remember if we eat broad beans or runner beans. But, we use a peeler to remove the fibrous edges, anyway.

If they're really fresh and not too old (too long on the bush as it were) they won't be stringy - just try snapping one, if it snaps cleanly, then there's no string...

zeb- yours are runner beans ! (broad beans are much furier inside and not so long).

Flum - the ones you see for sale are usually picked far too late and are very stringy - as jamiesam say - if picked young enough you have no stringy bits, just chop and steam or boil - much nicer than the older ones.

If you have ones with stringy bits do as Zebra says - peel off the sides with a knife or potato peeler and then treat as above.

Very nice with butter melted over the top.

Oh that was why then. No strings. They had been picked like 10 minutes earlier, so v. fresh. Kept trying to find string and it kept snapping off. Thank you all
