I had never made scones at all before. I love baking but had heard how difficult they were to make so just bought them instead.

So, inspired by the Great British Bake off, I thought I would give them a go and used Paul Hollywood's Recipe and I am so impressed with the scones and myself - they are so light and yummy.

I am eating the second one already - I do believe they are best eaten the day that they are made so I will keep at them Grin

Anyone else tried the recipe?

This is very similar to one I use from a ratty old Scottish cookery book I picked up from god-knows-where. The baking powder really makes them so light. Because they are so light you can eat twice as many!

They won't keep. Absolutely not. In fact, they will kill you if you eat them tomorrow.

That is what I thought wahwah

Right, I might let the dc have one but I dont want to spoil their tea do I?

well, I had better eat the rest then Grin

Scones are very bad for children. It stunts their growth.

wahwah what is your scone recipe?

I have tried 2 different recipes over the past week and although light and tasty (VERY tasty) they didnt rise as much as I wanted them to.

PrettyFeckinVacant · 26/08/2010 16:28

No!!

just to save the little kiddies, you understand.

8oz plain flour
pinch of salt
1 level teaspoon bicarboante of soda (don't be tempted to put in more)
1 1/2 level teaspoons cream of tartar
1 oz butter
milk (enough to make mix soft but not sticky)

Mixy mixy mixy (usual way), 2.5 inch cutter Gas7/220/425 for about 10 mins.

thanks wahwah

will have another go tomorrow... or tonight, once the little darlings are in bed. Grin

Interesting that Paul Hollywood's recipe uses strong flour, never heard of that for scones before. Wonder if that's what makes the difference?

PrettyFeckinVacant · 26/08/2010 23:42

I thought that too Lilo, I got out the ordinary flour and then checked the recipe. They are very light and bread-like but with a gorgeous outer crunchy crust.

I managed to save 3 for tomorrow - just hope they dont kill me as wahwah said.
