Picked up some blackberries from the allotment and going to make crumble, but want to stick it in the freezer. Should I cook it first?

Yes. The apples, especially, will not look good unless cooked.

You can always take it out before the top is starting to brown.

Crumble mix keeps in a sealed container in the fridge for ages........ make plenty!

Yep - I do it Riven's way, cook the fruit, but not the crumble.

But if you do the crumble separately in a big batch for instance, you could freeze the blackberries separately without cooking them.

Yep easiest to do it all separately and freeze in containers, then your crumble dish isn't wasting away in the freezer when it could be used for various other things. Plus it will take up less room that way.

Thanks for the tips. I'm stock piling for post baby so will probably just freeze it all together. Have some foil containers which I am going to use so don't need to worry about the dish.

So if I am doing the filling separately and not cooking the topping should I just do it on the hob?

Yes you can cook the apple until it is almost tender. It will fully cook when made into the crumble. You'll need to freeze this in your containers.
The best way to freeze any small uncooked fruit like black currants/berries etc is to open freeze them. Lay them on a baking tray and they will freeze like peas - not all stuck together. As soon as they have frozen scrape them into a plastic bag and put them back into the freezer. Then you can take out just the amount you want.

Any mushy fruit makes lovely ice lollies.

You could always freeze the blackberries separately and make the crumbles as you go ... I do it this way, ultra-lazy and doesn't take much more time than pre-cooking IME.

Chop/slice up apples, chuck in Pyrex dish, sprinkle over frozen blackcurrants, add brown sugar then microwave the whole lot for a few minutes. Then top (with ready made crumble mix) and bung in oven.
