Ice cube trays seems so small now for freezing food! I need at least 7 cubes to make a portion for my 8 month old. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative containers?

I have started collecting the trays you get with a Chinese, I dont have that many but MIL is collecting hers. You can sometimes get 2 portions in these.

I used a muffin tray/tin to freeze portions for my children. That way I could freeze 12 decent-sized portions at one go.

Cheap ramekin dishes from IKEA, one portion in each.

I used yoghurt pots. Sterilize them first with Miltons to get rid of any bugs - but then they freeze fine.

azzie - I really like the idea od the muffin tray but how do you get the portions out? Or is it a flexible tin, & if so, where can you get them?

Ethel Austin sell little plastic containers that are ideal for freezing - and they hold one portion quite easily. I've been using them for ages and they're just great.

the soft plastic Margarine/Butter containers are great!! They hold good size portions (you can spoon in as little or as much as you want depending on childs age/diet). They stack nicely in the freezer and the food pops out sooooo easily. They also go in the dishwasher no problem!

I clicked on this topic to add my comment about 'Pound Shop'' bargains only to find that i wasn't the only cheapskate shooper on mUmsnet!! Yes I can highly recommend the 6 for a £ little containers - attractive colours and just the right size - swallow your pride and get down to the Pound Shop!!!

Jgb, I didnt think about the £ shop containers, I often pop in our local shop, you can pick up some good bargains. I shall go and get some asap

I used to go to our local ironmongers and buy tin foil dishes - they had a whole range of different sizes. I used tart sized ones to make up small portions of cottage pie. I then just bunged them in freezer bags. You couldn't reuse the foil dish unfortunately, but they were very cheap and I got loads of them.

Those 'six for 99p' containers are also really useful in packed lunch boxes, for grapes, Ritz crackers etc. So don't lose them once your babes have outgrown them!
