As i understand it, I can cook the base (meat/fish mixture) then what do i do?:

freeze that and when I need it I first defrost it, then top it with mashed potatoes and cook in the oven

OR

make the topping, cook it all then freeze the lot? if I choose this option how do i use them: first defrost then heat in the oven thouroughly or put in the oven straight from frozen? and for how long?

oh, it's all so confusing!!

Ooops, that was meant to be 'freeze' in the title, not 'freexe'

I prepare them in freezer-to-oven dishes or foil trays. Make complete and you can reheat straight from frozen in a moderate oven.

I freeze mine complete with the mashed potatoes, then cook in the oven from frozen.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

I'll do it that way then. Would 20-30min be enough in the oven at say 180C? I'm just estimating.

Actually following an old thread on MN I went out and purchased a load of trays from Morrissons but never got around to using them. I have decided to spend eveningings cooking for the freezer when Dh is away.

I usually give it 30 - 35 minutes, although it depends on the size of the tray.

I'll do that WWB. Thank you.
They're the lrgest trays I could find. Dh eats a lot so I always cook recipes for 4 so we can all eat enough.

Agree on 30-35 mins. I do all sorts of meals in the foil trays and they take pretty much the same to time to heat up. Great if different family members fancy different meals.
