How long can you keep garlic in the fridge?

Is it actually meant to be stored in the fridge or veg rack? I'm obviously not an experinced cook. I keep my garlic bulbs in the fridge, sometimes up to 2 months. I use it and it seems fine in food.

Does keeping it for long affect flavour over time? Does it rot?

I've always had garlic in the kitchen, as has my mum, it's never gone in the fridge. Just on the kitchen counter in a pretty pot. If i have a lot of it some of it, can be there for about 2 months also!

hmmm... my comma makes that hard to read.

It should have read: If i have a lot of it, some of it can be there for about 2 months.

Keep it out so it stays dry.

Keeps forever.

Thanks. I will keep it out of fridge. I think it makes more sense. :)

i keep it in a garlic bag..
i guess by the time i get to the end of a pack it has been there for a couple of months or so..

I like the garlic bag. Is it available in local shops?

I grow it, then string it up in plaits in the shed and it keeps for about six months (assuming we haven't eaten it all by then).

I keep mine in the veg draw in the fridge until it starts to sprout or walks off itself!

mousymouse · 18/08/2010 16:13

I always keep it with my potatoes and onions in a basket in a dark corner of the kitchen.
keeps long, a few months (but usually used up quicker).

Don't think you're meant to keep garlic in the fridge or it'll sprout. Garlic bags/garlic pots at room temp are fine.

I went to a garlic farm (Isle of Wight) a couple of weeks ago, so obviously I am now a garlic aficionado.

Garlic that you buy in a supermarket gets those green sprouts because it has been kept in cold storage for up to a year, so when they put it out on the shelves it suddenly warms up and thinks it's time to sprout.

Garlic that has never been in cold storage should be kept somewhere warm and dry and it will last for aaaaages.

Where one might buy garlic that hasn't been in cold storage is anyone's guess, unless you happen to live in the Isle of Wight Grin
