Passata instead of skinned deseeded tomatoes?

Hi

If a recipe calls for 375g of skinned deseeded tomatoes, chopped, would you substitute passata or tinned chopped tomatoes? (I have no whole tomatoes in)
Should I use the same gramme if I do? Thanks

I would use passata, the same weight as the recipe.

TrillianAstra · 17/08/2010 13:24

Oh my god - what evil recipe expects you to skin and deseed tomatoes? Shock

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 17/08/2010 13:25

TA, tomatoes are so easy to skin and deseed. And the results are definitely worth it.

TrillianAstra · 17/08/2010 13:26

Really? Really really? What so bad about the seeds? When it's all chopped up anyway?

Thanks ladies. It's an AK one for ds - flaked cod with tomatoes and courgette.

I never have all the ingredients!

The seeds dilute the flavour of the tomato flesh. Honestly, it is worth deseeding and deskining. It only takes a minute.

id use either, but would probably use passate instead of a tin...

when it comes to any form of tomatoe in a recipie, i just use which ever form i happen to have Smile

just read whole thread...

if for a baby then check your passatta as some contain added salt Shock
tesco own brand passatta contains salt Angry

TheChewyToffeeMum · 17/08/2010 14:39

With a weight of 375g I suspect AK got hers from a can in the first place.

overthehillsandfaraway · 17/08/2010 15:02

Oh god, just checked the pack and it does contain salt - why would they do that!!!! Will it be okay I've made a bloody huge batch with expensive fish. It says the salt equivalent is .5g/100g

how old is the baby?

i think after 6m they can tolerate the teeny tiniest amount of salt, and by 1year i think they are allowed 0.5g of salt a day.

TBH id use it, but buy a different brand of passatta next time.

I only found out recently that some (but not all) passatta contains salt, and i have no idea why.

Thanks so much nannyl, I'd never have thought to check. It's from aldi so thats what I get for buying cheap stuff I guess. He is 7.5 month but weights a massive almost 24lb so I think it'll be okay this once. Will just shop more wisely next time. Thanks a lot.

Sorry - that should be weighs not weights! And no he isn't massively overfed on the wrong foods, he was 10lb6 when born and just a really gorgeous ball of fat big boy!
