How many times a week do you eat potatoes?

suiledonne · 13/08/2010 16:06

As in boiled, roasted, mashed, homemade chips/wedges rather than processed?

My DH loves them and dd1 doesn't eat pasta or rice so I end up doing potatoes nearly every day.

I'm sick of them but stuck in a rut.

about 3-4 times a week. love them. dh not so keen though.

DuelingFanjo · 13/08/2010 16:23

3-4 times a week also.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/08/2010 16:25

About once a week - as wedges, mostly.

We ususally have rice or pasta.

Have you tried sweet potato? Dice them up, cook in oven with oil, paprika, chilli flakes and salt. They take less time to cook tahn normal spuds as well - about 25 mins.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/08/2010 16:25

Once or twice a week I think.

DH doesn't eat carbs in the evening very often, and DS and I are pasta lovers. Will be more often once we get into casserole weather.

about twice a week +/- 1 meal

suiledonne · 13/08/2010 16:37

I love pasta and rice but it seems a waste just cooking one portion. Anyone use those microwave pouches of rice or pasta? Are they any good or full of additives?

we have them quite a lot as i'm a spud pervert. Could you try doing them differently to give you a change but tempt your dh and dd to eat them? Eg mash one night, make extra into gnocci the next night? Could that bridge the pasta potato divide? Your dd could roll the balls of gnocci maybe as it could be a bit labour intensive though you don't need that many each. Also then she'll know they are potato!

Also potato (or fish) cakes again with left over mash.

Thinly sliced with onions and stock and baked is lovely, you can put other root veg in too. Smile

MrsSaxon · 13/08/2010 20:22

Twice a week, more in Winter. We then to eat pasta, rice, cous cous or bread.

Goober · 13/08/2010 20:24

2 at most.

TheMoonOnAStick · 13/08/2010 20:28

3-4..? Gosh I'm not too sure now I think about itGrin

I did jacket potatoes differently the other day by scraping out the shells and mashing the middles with butter, cheese, softened leeks and tuna and then refilling the shells. Well, everyone said it made a change anywaySmile

bounty007 · 13/08/2010 20:40

Every day without fail...my DH would divorce me if we didn't Grin sometimes twice a day...we LOVE potatoes here!

NinthWave · 13/08/2010 20:43

LOL at spud pervert Grin

We eat themabout 3 or 4 times a week, at the moment it's all new potatoes just boiled with mint/parsley/butter, as I love them. Out of season it's more jackets/mash etc.

CheeseandGherkins · 13/08/2010 20:45

I'd have them everyday if I didn't have to peel them....I love potatoes but hate peeling them.

Flibbertyjibbet · 13/08/2010 20:49

Usually every other day-ish, as we eat a lot of rice and pasta. (mind you I put a lot of potato cubes in my curries so its probably nearly every day!)
But at the moment its potato with salad for lunch and more potatoes for tea.... cause its POTATO time on the allotment and they are soooooo delicious!!!

We do, jacket spuds, potato wedgies, mash, boiled little new pots with salad cream on, sliced potatoes done in a casserole dish with grated cheese between the layers, roasted, I make cheddar and potato soup... but when buying potatoes I think the trick is to buy them from someone who knows all the different types and what they are best for.

Nothing like a King Edward for Jacketing and a Maris piper for a roastie. mmmmmmm

Smash09 · 14/08/2010 09:58

Tend to have baked potato for lunch about twice a week, then new potatoes, roasties, and mash pretty much every week, so I'd say 5 times a week (3 times for dinner) - cheap and versatile, can't beat em. Smile

domesticsluttery · 14/08/2010 21:48

Once or twice a week at this time of the year. More frequently during the winter.

I prefer pasta, rice, cous cous etc but DH prefers potatoes.

southeastastra · 14/08/2010 21:51

mm lots, chips, new potatoes, roast potatoes, potatoe salad, lots probably

pasta is shite

corns1lk · 14/08/2010 21:52

3-4 times a week

nbee84 · 14/08/2010 21:52

C&G - we eat lots of new potatoes as I hate peeling them too. Jacket spuds don't need peeling, nor do wedges. I toss new pots in some oil, paprika, and oregano and roast them in the oven for 35 mins - delish Smile. In fact, the only time I peel potatoes is for a proper roast dinner - and we only have one of those every couple of months.

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/08/2010 21:54

Suiledonne - you can easily cook one helping of rice in a microwave

75g of rice (per person) - add 175ml of boiling water per 75g and salt, cover with cling film and cook on high for 10 mins. Then rinse with kettle of boiked water to get rid of starch. Perfectly cooked rice every time. You can cook 1 x 75g, or 6 x 75g, using the same method and time, and it always works.

I have alse ran out of rice and got those Tilda pouches - the coconut and lime leaf ones are really nice. Don't know if there are full of additives or not.

Never tried those pouches of pasta becaue they seem vile in therory.

MrsJohnDeere · 14/08/2010 21:56

Once or twice max at this time of year. New potatoes past their best, maincrop not yet ready.
2 or 3 times per week Sept to March.
Barely at all April and May when the previous years crop tastes old and tired.

nbee84 · 14/08/2010 21:56

GOML - do you not find the rice pouches have a funny after taste? I find they do and also taste a bit greasy. Might be just me Grin

glucose · 14/08/2010 21:58

at least 5 times and I have started to save time by prepping!
at the weekend by peeling, chopping 'old' potatoes for mash/pot salad/roasties store them in a large container full of water in the fridge, at the same time I am boiling a load of new pots for the fridge which we have reheated as new pots, or sliced and fried. It makes them just as easy as slapping pasta/rice in a pan on week nights!

suiledonne · 14/08/2010 22:26

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So it's not just us then? Most people seem to have them fairly often.

I'm going to try and make an effort for my own dinners. Yesterday I did roast chicken but did a little risotto for myself at the same time and really enjoyed it.

Getorfmoilaind I'm going to try your rice cooking method. Never thought of doing rice in the microwave. Agree as regards pouches of pasta - the thought is unpleasant. I'll get the Tilda pouch and give it a try.

I think I am bored with the type of dinner we have with the potatoes as much as the potatoes themselves!

Going to be more inventive even if it means doing 2 meals sometimes.
