... choose to eat

toast/crumpets without butter?
soup without bread?
bolognese/chilli/curry without pasta/potato/rice?
burgers without a bun?

or anything else that usually goes with a particular thing?

Yes, me.

Don't like butter so never have it on bread (will have cream or mascarpone on crumpets though)

Soup - depends on the kind of soup, but not usually.

Bogognaise etc - no, I prefer the meal to be mostly starch and the meat an accompaniment.

Chil1234 · 13/08/2010 10:24

You're only really talking about people on low-fat or low-carb diets with that list. :) Successful dieters are usually the ones eating smaller amounts of butter, bread, rice etc. rather than none at all. I don't put sugar on a lot of things others do (strawberries, breakfast cereals etc.) because I don't have a sweet tooth. And I'm not wild about chocolate either for the same reason.

IMoveTheStars · 13/08/2010 10:25

depends on what I've eaten for the rest of the day. If I've had carbs for breakfast and lunch, then I'll go carb free for dinner.

I do try not to eat too much lard though, but it doesn't appear to make much difference

Hassled · 13/08/2010 10:28

Yes - quite often. I've never been a huge fan of bread - I'd rather soup + more soup than soup + bread.

And I don't like butter - was given rancid butter as a child (by accident).

nappyaddict · 13/08/2010 10:38

What do you have on toast/crumpets Hassled?

Chil You'd think that but my cousin who is not on a diet or specifically trying to be low carb just never thinks to put these what I call normal accompaniments with food. Eating at her house is always an odd experience for me!

I eat burgers with mashed potato and gravy without a bun but if i am having burgers with salad I have the bun.

"Chil You'd think that but my cousin who is not on a diet or specifically trying to be low carb just never thinks to put these what I call normal accompaniments with food."

Some people just eat peculiar things and a lot more simply can't cook (or can't be bothered!). I had supper at a friend's house recently and it was a plain omelette served with heated up frozen roast potatoes. A dinner plate with nothing green on it is a bit of an oddity to me...

luciemule · 13/08/2010 10:52

I had a crumpet with smear of jam this morning as my 'no- processed carbs' thing wasn't working too well and I craved.

However, I can easily eat soup with no bread. I choose thick soup with lentils in to fill me up and put a lot watercress on top to munch whilst I'm eating- it takes longer to eat then and you feel fuller.

Yeah me, I'd eagerly eat all the things OP mentions except dry crumpets/toast I don't much like bread, even with butter. I have lots of peculiar food preferences, mind would probably love your cousin's cuisine.

Most people, especially women, are way too addicted to bread and starchy foods, I suspect.

nappyaddict · 13/08/2010 11:30

ragged Shall I invite you both round lol.

So what do you have with chilli/curry/bolognese/burgers etc? I usually have pasta, rice, jackets, wraps, tacos, pitta etc and couldn't really imagine it without.

Do your family eat it like you or do they have the starch to go with it?

Do you have jam or marmalade for example instead of butter on toast/crumpets?

not at home

often do in restaurants though - there's just too much food

CoteDAzur · 13/08/2010 11:43

I take one bun out of a burger, eat soup without bread, and hate butter on bread.

However I have rice (steamed), pasta (tomato sauce, not cream or pesto), or bread with every meal, as per the advice of dietician. Her advice got me from 69 kg to 58 kg last winter so I intend to stick with it.

ragged · 13/08/2010 11:44

I tend to only eat bread in packed lunches. Would rather have jam in porridge than on bread, for instance.

I would probably only add rice/bread to curry/chili if it was too hot on its own.

DC are unadventurous, sigh, they tend to want a starch and probably wouldn't even try curry, chili or tacos. They'd consume burgers w/out bread, though preferably with ketchup.

I have this 'thing' about how we westerners eat too much wheat-based foods, and accordingly have tried to minimise my/our intake over the last 15 years. The so-called rice- and pasta-based diet of role-model-healthy southern Europeans, for instance, is much more heavy in fruit + veggies and meat/fish; I wonder if we were conned into thinking that a grains-rich diet is the healthy ideal.

nappyaddict · 13/08/2010 11:49

You may have a good point there.

So with curry and chilli do you just eat a big plateful with nothing else? What about bolognese type dishes? Would burgers be on there own or with a salad?

Have found some yummy looking sausage and burger salads I may try. You might like them?

We always have a lot of vegies as well if it's a main meal, so I suppose that takes the place of starches for me.
Thanks for links :).

OrmRenewed · 13/08/2010 11:54

Yes to soup without bread. Sometimes

EightiesChick · 13/08/2010 12:02

I am bread, pasta addicted so would definitely have all these. I tried once, when on a diet, eating tomatoes on toast but without spread on the toast - eww! Claggy an horrible.

Thing is though, even if I didn't eat these things myself, I am aware they are standard accompaniments for most people so I would offer them to a visitor. I would ask if anyone wanted bread with soup, and I would just butter crumpets as who on earth eats crumpets without butter?

One exception I think - burgers can be eaten in a bun but can also go naked on a plate with chips and peas type accompaniment.

CoteDAzur · 13/08/2010 13:59

Nappyaddict - If your intention is to diet or at least watch what you eat in terms of calories & fat, may I point out that sausages are a big no-no, whether on salad or not, because of their very high fat content.

You are better off eating a simple grilled chicken, rice, and vegetables or salad.

nappyaddict · 13/08/2010 16:35

Nope no intention of watching what I eat I enjoy food waaaaaaaay too much Grin

ragged do you put all the veggies in the chilli/curry/spag bol or do you put some in and then have some seperate on the side? What sort of veggies would you typically have with that sort of meal?
