Want to do poncy cupcakes for wedding...

ButterpieBride · 12/08/2010 20:54

OK, I might be being daft here (I probably am!) but I have been lusting after the poncy cupcakes that divide mumsnet so for my wedding. I can't afford for someone else to make them, so it is down to me.

I love baking, but so far I have only ever done basic baking for kids or to eat with a brew, nothing very pretty.

So...any tips? Is it very hard to make pretty cakes? How far in advance can I make them? Can I freeze them?

I have a range oven, if that is relavent, and the wedding is 28th August. Family are coming to stay for the two days prior to the wedding, although I'm the baking expert of the family (and I'm no expert!)

The theme (if you could call it that- we are pretty much going with what we like, but it does all kind of fit vaguely) is theatrical, bridesmaids dress are purple and black and a bit gothy (but nothing else really matches them tbh- my bouquet is multicoloured and handmade from scraps by my friends), I'm from Lancashire, he's from Newcastle, wedding in Gateshead, lots of kids and very traditional relatives will be there so nothing too weird or we'll have a riot on our hands :)

I already have one of those big 5 tier cake stands and a few more traditional glass ones because I buy too much from charity shops.

So...ideas anyone? :D

Im doing cupcake favours for my sisters wedding. I didnt fancy the idea of freezing them so am making them all the day before.
Im using silver cake cases, red buttercream icing and a dusting of that special edible glitter stuff that you can buy in cake shops, nice and simple but looks effective.
If your bouquet is mixed could you maybe have purple icing and then alternate colours of the glitter stuff so you sort of tie in the mixed colours?

Well, I made 100 poncey cupcakes for DH's 40th birthday last year! I made the basic cakes over the week before the party and put them all in the freezer. I must admit, I did ice the whole lot in one go though, on the Friday night.

There is a lovely lady on here somewhere (and I will try to find her) who has her own cake business and makes hundreds of them and some of the pitures could really inspire you and I suspect she'll be able to give you some great advice.

I'll be back!

MaureenMLove · 12/08/2010 21:07

Message sent to cakey lady. Hope she gets it! Grin

Tippychoocks · 12/08/2010 21:11

you can freeze buns with no problems. I have only ever made batches of 50-60 but I have a professional mixer (ex was chef) with a huuuuuuge bowl.

Find a good recipie that works for you and practise!

For children's parties I have made a big cake in a pony or dinosaur or whatever shape and then made billions of cupcakes and left them naked, providing bowls of coloured icing, funky decorations, sprinkles etc and allowed the kids to make their own as an activity. It's very popular! Could you do that if your wedding is quite informal? It would certainly be an ice breaker.

You could have several hundreds-and-thousands on slippery dancefloor related injuries tho Grin

MaureenMLove · 12/08/2010 21:26

Doesn't she? I love the whole cupcake thing!

oopsandbabycoconuts · 12/08/2010 21:27

She also makes kick-ass brownies

ButterpieBride · 12/08/2010 21:30

Ooh, they are lovely! I love the mint choc chip ones! Any tips and tricks are very welcome. :D

I'm thinking a variety of different designs/flavours, as I have a very fussy and vocal family, so that way there will hopefully be something for everyone.

One thing I thought of was little cocktail umbrellas. Me and the bridesmaids have black brollies/parasols (the weather on the day will decide what we call them) and also me and DP love cocktails, the more ridiculous the better, so that could be a good thing.

I am kind of known (or at least I was before kids made me prefer a cup of tea and an early night) for wearing lots of glitter and feathers, big hair, ripped fishnets, doc martens and so on, (and actually so is DP- only replace that with tight trousers, blousey shirts, cravats and brylcream- ah, those were the days!) so OTT is good.

Lots of buttons, lace and feathers in the bouquet and so on (picture on my profile) and
I'm wearing combat boots and travelling there on the bus and metro. Even the baby bridesmaid is in black and purple, and copious amounts of eyeliner will be used on anyone old enough. Guests are a mixture of arty/musical types and middle aged working class northerners, which should be fun :)

I'm just giving you all some idea of the general mood of the wedding, to see if you have any ideas...

Dizzy - you got that tea-room up and running yet? Grin

lovely74 · 12/08/2010 21:40

I can't bake so I have no helpful tips, but I just wanted to say that if you've made them yourself they're not "poncey cupcakes", they're your lovingly homemade wedding cakes Smile

dizzydixies · 12/08/2010 21:41

dizzydixies · 12/08/2010 21:46

thanks Smile have sent you a message!

superdragonmama · 12/08/2010 21:47

I did this for my wedding last year!!! We actually only had cake at our reception - lots and lots of cakes, all made by me - including a 7 tier stand covered in those fab pretty cup cakes. Grin

I bought huge gorgeous - and expensive!- paper whatsits ( you know, the paper cup thingys that the cakes are baked in! Oh bother, can't remember what they're called!) from an internet site. They were black and white stripes with bright pink roses overprinted on the stripes. Looked amazing. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the site, but found them using a google search for cup cake accessories; they came from a specialist cake site.

I found a recipe online for the very trendy Red Velvet cup cakes, which worked like a dream. And my DH (to be) spent a jolly afternoon icing them all, about 120 of them, with a bag and a nozzle and a steady hand.

geordieminx · 12/08/2010 21:53

Shop called Humble pie not humble pis

Oh and village

oopsandbabycoconuts · 12/08/2010 22:00

here does amazing cupcake wrappers that they make in your choice of colours. Then you can bake them in plain white cases and dress them up.

mummytowillow · 12/08/2010 22:09

Sorry to hijack Butterpie BUT can I ask Dizzy a question(s) please??

I want to make some cupcakes for my daughters birthday its next Saturday 21st, can I bake the cakes on the Wednesday, will they be OK for the Saturday or should I freeze them??

Also, whats the easiest way to put the cream on, I want to pipe them, my mum has all the stuff to do it, but it looks tricky?? How thick should it be and do you need loads? I want pink cream with little flowers on the top?

Thanks Wink

PS Good luck Butterpie, hope they turn out OK!!

Jaquelinehyde · 12/08/2010 23:25
